I think he made Signs, and there may have been some oddness around the marketing for that, like his family was wealthy, or he had funds from some Indian-adjacent firm or something. Then afaik he coasted on that "success" in his future endeavors. I got the impression it was like people who buy their children pop hits.
Not sure what you're referring to regarding Signs, but it was The Sixth Sense that put Shyamalan on the map, and on whose inarguable success he ran on with diminishing returns for years afterwards.
