It was nice enough to not tell me it was my second worst. I had to specifically look.

I'd kind of like to hear what my worst performances are. Might be insightful to know what I'm slow on, or unknowledgeable about etc

If one of you chose United States for the country whose murder rate fell by 95%, I'm going to

Are you suggesting that a country with more guns than people ISN’T a reasonable guess?
+2
Level 49
Jul 12, 2024
def has a lot of murders, but such large stable countries don't drop there murder rate with 95%in 9 years.

I was being facetious. :-)

It's a real demonstration of how responsible the majority of American citizens are. I wonder what would happen if there were a billion guns in India, or hundreds of millions in Brazil, Nigeria, Iran, etc. It'd be an interesting experiment. A critical piece of the responsibility of self-governance.

Can you imagine winning the Olympics and all you got is twigs bent into a circle probably made by a 10 year old

A Pyrrhic victory?

Level 77

Probably woulda been a greater reward getting the olives from the branch
+4
Level 55
Jul 12, 2024
I guess that's what people got for winning instead of trophies and medals. I would have been REALLY SAD if I gotten olive branches for winning
+5
Level 66
Jul 12, 2024
You might technically only win an olive branch but (much like today) successful athletes would usually get paid handsomely by the city they represented. Cities wanted to prove they were the best and they were happy to invest heavily into athletes who could help them achieve that at the Olympics. The fame of winning the Olympics also opened a lot of other profitable doors for successful athletes as well.

are we sure antarctica was still undiscovered in 1700? what does undiscovered mean anyways? I feel like there were definitely indigenous people who discovered antarctica before then but decided it was way too cold to settle there.

Undiscovered by Europeans

People say the Russians discovered Antarctica in 1820, but there's something they forgot.

The penguins had already been living there for thousands of years!

Alright everybody, let's do a vibe check so we can get some definite feelings about whether Antarctica was discovered by indigenous Antarcticans prior to 1700
+8
Level 71
Jul 12, 2024
It's not unreasonable to assume that Antarctica was entirely undiscovered before the 1800s. The closest continental point to Antarctica would be Tierra del Fuego, which happens to be close to the Antarctic peninsula, but even then we're talking about 620 miles across the most perilous waters known to man. That plus there's absolutely nothing that would incentivize indigenous people to travel there. When you're talking about Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, or Madagascar, it's even farther, 2,000 miles or more.

I imagine they might have noticed it was getting "way too cold" a few hundred miles before coming anywhere near sighting land too.
+3
Level 80
Jul 12, 2024
It's certainly possible, but so far there's no evidence that suggests it's true. No archaeological finds, no indigenous stories of a voyage to such a place, and at best it would have been an extremely dangerous journey.

9/10 fell at the last hurdle, there's usually a trap in the last question and I thought Antarctica was too obvious.

Another 9/10 for me, somehow got the Olympics one wrong because I could've sworn I remembered something about the original winners being given silver medals, but I might be thinking about the first modern Olympics

Darn. Missed the pope question. Thought “your grace” sounded a lot more classy, but I guess the Catholic church is not known for its classiness.
