It makes more sense when you read that he inhaled pure oxygen for a while before going underwater (the air we usually breathe is only 21% oxygen).

The record for someone holding their breath underwater whilst breathing normally beforehand is much lower (although it's still impressive) at 11:35.

There is a new documentary out 'The Deepest Breath' about free diver Guillaume Néry trying to break the world record for depth. Free divers are pretty amazing, I scuba and have been on some dives with FDs....they are incredibly fast and the ones I've seen are incredibly lean/long, like eels.
