A very flukey 10/10 for me today, some tricky ones here that I had to guess on. Never seen Rio, never drank a cosmo, and had absolutely no idea on the casino (had a hunch it would be the one I'd never heard of; it paid off this time 😂)
Casino Royale is a 1967 spy parody film originally distributed by Columbia Pictures. It is loosely based on the 1953 novel of the same name by Ian Fleming; the first novel to feature the character James Bond.
They all make reference to the names of casinos in Las Vegas: Excalibur, Paris, Strat, Treasure Island, Luxor, Casino Royale, Rio, Mandalay Bay, Cosmopolitan and Wynn.
Siegel was a notorious mobster, he's worth reading about because he led a very interesting (albeit very violent) life.
He does have a Las Vegas link so he wouldn't have been the worst guess. In an attempt to go legitimate he became the owner of a hotel and casino called The Flamingo. Siegel was later assassinated, possibly by an investor in the casino not happy with the returns they were getting.
That's exactly why I guessed him. IIRC he sorta brought gambling to Las Vegas and invested in a lot of properties on the Strip. It wouldn't be far fetched that he'd have a building named after him, even if he was a mobster.
8/10 because of course I'm going to miss the question about a sports stadium, but I also missed the casino question in a 50/50 guess, which is disappointing. Haven't been to Vegas since '99, though, so maybe I'm less familiar with it than I thought. But I read Casino Royale last year--great book!
Wasn't it great, though? That could've been the only Bond book, and it still would've been great. It showed his rather more human, vulnerable side, I thought. The best part was the baccarat game, then the car chase where Bond actually got captured, and how his lover (forgot her name) was a double agent and suicided at the end...great twist.
I've dropped to 4th on my leaderboard today, and vermiciousknid is slowly but surely catching up with my average 😅
Also, did you know that it was made into a TV show - 1954? American Barry Nelson was the first James Bond actor ever.

Second guessed myself into two wrong answers.
