7/10 which should have been 8/10; I know the Boers are South African but for some reason I've often heard about the Boer war but wasn't really aware of the war in South Africa so I thought, against better judgement, that can't be it and picked India instead. Stupid.
The other two I got wrong were sinologist and Mexico. Hercules was a good guess.
Sino is a prefix pertaining to China - from the Latin Sinæ, which is used to mean South China on the world map of Roman-Egyptian Claudius Ptolemy. Sino-Soviet relations, Sinocentrism, just go for the Chinese answer whenever you see it😊
Wow, another one that lined up perfectly for me—10th-best score ever. Only slowed down a tiny bit on Mexico’s name and the vitamin. Thank goodness for ketamine, AKA “vitamin K”!
I did not know the song question. Knew all the others but lost most time on q7 because I read beach-blonde which threw me and had me thinking about different types of blonde and different ways of achieving it, like hair lightening by salt from the sea plus sunlight.. but nothing like that seemed to be there so I went back to the normal bleaching thing.
Only realised afterwards when rereading the results
When I looked at my LB and saw the high scores I was encouraged...a comfortable 10/10, slowest on Q2, 6 & 10 as I thought through each answer. Q10 remembered the 'Herculean' tasks....still only #8 on my LB
Even being on the leaderboard is solid if you have a lot of the regulars as friends. I don’t remember the last time before today that I was in my top 5.
Your logic is on the right lines. The 12 labours of Hercules were supposed to be impossible because the guy setting them (Eurystheus) was trying get Hercules killed for Hera's favour (unlike the Disney version, the Greek mythology version of Hera really, really didn't like Hercules).
After realising Hercules was killing the monsters thrown at him with ease Eurystheus changed things up and told him to clean a stable that was impossible to clean, thinking Hercules would die of old age before he was finished.
10/10, one of my more comfortable scores in a while today, 9,921 😁 Bit of an educated guess on the Bernie Taupin question, but I felt like Elton John was the most likely to have a songwriting partner.
It’s the Boer War, not Boer Wars. The British were trying to assert their dominance over Dutch settlers, known as Boers (Dutch for farmer). The war (which also called the Second Boer War) lasted from 1899 to 1902, and was quite brutal. The British even relied on support from New Zealand and Australian troops. Over 150,000 lives were lost, including many civilians. Like all wars, such a tragedy. And what have we learned? Not a thing!
There was, in fact, a First Boer War - albeit a much smaller affair - 18 years earlier, which is why the bigger one is, as you note, sometimes referred to as the Second Boer War.
So "Boer Wars", plural, is not actually incorrect.

Congenital Iodine Deficiency is the preferred term that describes this condition more neutrally (does give away the answer a bit in this context).
Admittedly cretinism does still persists in certain textbooks, but its very much on the way out of medical terminology.
