Ye, common misconception for sure. Lots of references to the line being a cultural divide between North and South. But the line actually starts on the Atlantic coast at Fenwick Island, Delaware's southeast corner, and forms Delaware's southern border with Maryland, then turns 90° to the north to form it's western border with Maryland too, before finally turning 90° to the west again to make Maryland's northern/Pennsylvania's southern border, continuing more than halfway from where WV takes over as its southern border to where PA's current southwest corner is. Maryland's actual southern border, with Virginia and WV, is the Potomac River. The only exceptions are DC and the Eastern Shore border with VA, which was supposed to start at a certain island in the Bay and go due east across the peninsula to the ocean, but instead started north of the island and then veered even farther north as it went. That kind of botched survey work was beneath Mason and Dixon who actually did a fantastic job
