My guess is that when the word came into common use in English from South Africa, the British were much more familiar with German, where several words end in -dt, and assumed it ought to be spelt like that. Just a guess though, what do I know

I think in the Spanish/British colonization of the 'New World' sailors were provided a daily ration of rum which was streched with water & called grog. They also added lemon or lime juice to improve the flavor. Hence, the grog cocktail. Unknowningly, the citrus helped address scurvy. Kinda like a daiquiri

Its an afrikaans (South African) word for field. Other countries add a T so that the proununciation is easier.
Like "Wildebeest". The original pronunciation sound like "Vilderbeeust"
