8/10 for me today. Didn't know the Jesuits one at all, but I could have sworn China already had firearms before Portugal got there. They definitely had gunpowder and various weapons based on it, but I suppose it depends on your definition of "firearm"

In "Seven Samurai" it is possible to date the action from the fact that the bandits have firearms. When my college roommate saw it, his professor of Japanese history was in the row behind him and muttered "1543" when he first saw one of the bandits carrying a musket.

(TIL: according to Wikipedia the Japanese imported primitive firearms, more like bazookas than muskets, from China several centuries earlier. But it doesn't appear that they were in common use, unlike the Portuguese muskets that came later.)

I remember reading about first contacts between Europeans and the Japanese and it said that the Japanese were fascinated with the firearms and they were eager to trade for them. No clue about the Chinese though, they had gunpowder but maybe a firearm needs to be carried in a.. well, arm.

Yeah, I remember seeing a bit about that in a documentary about the early Sengoku period. If the question was just about Japan, I'd have gotten it right, but I've since looked it up, and China absolutely had weapons like the "fire lance" hundreds of years before the arrival of the Portuguese, so I feel this one was questionable haha

The exact wording in the question is "matchlock firearms" which is a specific type of a firearm. So while I can't 100% confirm the question is correct, I can say China having some types of firearms before is irrelevant because the question is about matchlock firearms specifically
