Napoleon didn't actually choose to invade it in Winter. He invaded it in the summer. He sent a letter to the Russian leader asking for his surrender, but he never responded. Napoleon waited for a reply for a month until it was winter, and then the Russians came.

Neither did Hitler. He made STAGGERING progress in the summer, and the winter is what stopped him from finishing the war before it really escalated. You should never invade Russia, because you will have to fight in the winter some time.

Genghis Khan's conquests led to large amounts of land being abandoned, allowing forests to regrow. Overall the regrowth is estimated to have pulled 700 million tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere--equal to the annual amount of gasoline used globally! This also may have resulted in a period of global cooling.

America has its own Chernobyl, though it's not on America at all. The Americans were responsible for doing this—the United States detonated the Castle Bravo nuke at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, a protectorate of the United States. The people were evacuated, of course, and were later returned to the island when they thought it was stable. However, the Castle Bravo bomb was accidentally 2.5 times stronger than the proposed megatons of TNT. It's not just Bikini Atoll either; the Ivy Mike bomb also annihilated the whole island of Enewetak Atoll, leaving huge amounts of radiation. The United States later built a dome that prevents exposure to the other islands, similar to Chernobyl's sarcophagus. So in one sentence, the United States basically nearly destroyed the Marshall Islands.

about 5.5 million years ago, the Mediterranean Sea had dried dried up but was refilled in a catastrophic flood when the atlantic broke through the strait of gibraltar. A similar flood filled the Black Sea 9000 years ago, possibly giving rise to the biblical flood story.
