Most people know about the story of the original marathon run by Pheidippides in 490B.C., when he ran 26 miles to tell of the victory over the Persians, and died after delivering the message. However, one aspect that is not often told is that just before that he ran 150 miles to Sparta to ask for more reinforcements, which most likely caused his death.
+4
Level 68
Aug 4, 2022
ironically he ran 150 miles from Marathon to Sparta to ask for the Spartans help in the battle of Marathon but they refused because they didn't want to miss their festival, so he ran 150 miles back, fought in the battle, then ran 25 miles back to Athens just to gasp out 'we won' and die. Oh and he did it barefoot.

what an diversical fact
+5
Level ∞
Sep 30, 2021
I looked it up. Unfortunately, I'd have to rate this fact as mostly false.

It's true there were some Hungarians who ended up in the Sudan in the 16th century. But they were fighting FOR the Ottomans not escaping from them.

The Hungarians interbred with the local population and now speak Arabic just like everyone else there. They also look like the natives too except for slightly lighter skin. It's still an interesting fact but I was expecting a bunch of pale skinned, Hungarian-speaking people in Sudan which is simply not the case.

Seeing as they repelled Germanic Austria for all of World War 1 in harsh alpine warfare, I don't really understand your attempt to link the decision following earlier fierce determination and success to later failure. It contradicts the point you're attempting.

Well they were attacking, Austria was repelling them while fighting two other fronts. In any case, not much changed in the Alps, the 11 Isonzo offensives all happened further south. However AH was in very bad shape and would likely lose eventually if Germany didn't come to help after Russia was out.
