Actually, I’m a bit off. It used duck cloth in its construction, which I think is in relation to being waterproof? It was used in WWII as just a waterproof tape by the Americans, though. Duct tape became common later, and apparently it was given the shiny silver colour to make it suitable for ducts. Anyway, duck tape is the OG name.
