There are many legends about Adolphe Sax, inventor of the saxophone. As a child, he apparently suffered many injuries including drinking a bowl of acid thinking it was milk, falling onto a hot cast-iron frying pan, being struck by a brick, swallowing a pin, surviving a gunpowder explosion, falling down 3 stories, and almost drowning in a river. After he invented the saxophone, a group of rivals tried to sue him into bankruptcy and even attempted to assassinate him.

The bootlace worm, Lineus longissimus, might be the longest animal on the planet. Individual specimens have been reported up to 55 meters (180 ft) in length. Living off the coast of Britain, it produces a highly toxic mucus. Lovely.
