#348 is just beginning for controversy on this site... although I will say the geographical closeness of Cyprus to Asia compared to Europe seems like pretty strong evidence to me that Cyprus is in Asia :)

The closest country to Cyprus is Turkey, which is also a controversial country. I think Cyprus is in whatever continent Turkey is.

I think it's generally agreed that geographically, the part of Turkey with Istanbul is European while Anatolia is Asian. It might be more difficult to say where it falls culturally.

Geography ain't objective at all. Every person can name and organize the countries as they please. Why are people so obssesed with the idea that everything is just black and white? Acknowledging that Cyprus is either Europe or Asia is a matter of who you ask this question.

With all due respect, this isn't true. It wouldn't be geographically correct to any degree to 'opinionate' geography. To say Cyprus is part of Asia would be wrong. It is part of Europe, and it will stay a part of Europe.

Tasmania is 2,610 km from Antarctica, 250 km from Australia, and 1,485 km from New Zealand.

The only reason that fact 348 could possibly have been posted is because it contains Cyprus.

it depends on which part of turkey because of Istanbul. Istanbul is in Europe or the rest of turkey which is in Asia.

it is geographically closer to the Asian part of Turkey therefore, kibris is in Asia. I mean Cyprus. It is pronounced kibris in my language.

Budapest was actually formed by the merger of Buda, Pest, and Óbuda. Óbuda was left out of the new name.

Cyprus is in Europe, not Asia ! The world thinks it s in Europe but on jetpunk it’s in Asia! Not in any of my atlases I own is it in Asia! It is in Europe! Jetpunk, you are crazy!

While culturally, it is European, and generally Cypriots do consider themselves European, JetPunk mainly focuses on geography, so it would make sense to consider it Asian, as it is geographically much closer to Asia than it is to Europe.

I know a similar story to #350. When the 3 South Korean counties(Changwon, Masan, Jinhae) got merged and form a new city, each of them proposed to name the new city Changmajin, Majinchang, Jinmachang. As you see, all of those proposals were too weird, so they just named the new city 'Changwon'.

It would be pretty cool if there were geographic continents and cultural continents. That way, both the Cyprus issue will be fixed and it could be easier to explain what region and subject you are talking about.

I have no particular objection to classifying Cyprus as Asian, however I wonder why Jetpunk doesn't employ this logic consistently.

If Cyprus is in Asia because it is closer to the Asian mainland than it is to Africa or Europe, then shouldn't Jetpunk classify numerous Caribbean island nations, such as Trinidad and Tobago, as South American? They're far closer to the South American mainland than to the North American mainland. And yet, Jetpunk classifies Trinidad and Tobago as a North American nation.

Idc about distances in this scenario. Why do we deem Trinidad and Tobago North American when it's closer to South America. Why is PNG bordering Indonesian yet is Oceanian. Why is Cyprus part of EU? There's way more than a simple it is x closer to this continent, meaning it is part of a continent.
