A just wonderful unknown error

Submitted by KiloNova on February 19, 2026
After working on an SVG for a quiz I randomly got the error "Unspecified Fatal Error Encountered, Aborting" in Inkscape. The file is only 200kb or so and I haven't done anything much with the file besides adding shapes, text, editing nodes, and a bit of tracing with bitmap.

I don't have a clue as to why this is and I currently can't work on the SVG because it continues to bring up the error the moment I open the file. If anyone could help that would be very much appreciated. I don't want the SVG I worked hours on to go to waste.

SVGs are just text files. You can open it in notepad and view the raw xml.

I suspect something in there is causing it to crash.

Try pasting the text into an svg validater online to find the errors and then fix them

Likely something in the SVG headings, use one of those software to optimize SVGs to fix it.

You can also open the SVG file in a web browser and it’ll give you a specific error message and usually the line in your file causing issues.

What do you recommend using then, if not Inkscape?

Fair point to be honest, it's good, but it crashes so much.
