I don't know too much about the launch, but I'll go over what I know.
The 4 astronauts on board are going to orbit around the earth twice (currently trying to get in orbit as I type this) and slingshot their way to the moon, which should take about 4-5 days. Then they'll do a lunar flyby and loop around in the moon, slingshotting their way back. I believe this is the first time this is actually being used for a space mission, so it'll be interesting to see the results. After another 4-5 days, the astronauts should be back here safe on Earth.
Back to the moon we go!
The amount of money that goes to NASA has declined by a lot. And their effectiveness per dollar spent has declined even further.
If you told people in 1971 that we wouldn't make it back to the moon for nearly 60 years they'd have thought you were crazy.
People could be living on Mars right now.
In 1998, Dark Energy was discovered.
In 2000, we orbited a asteroid.
2001 brought us the first landing on an asteroid
In 2004, First orbit around Saturn.
In 2005, first confirmed Cryovolcano
2008 we discovered water in the form of ice on the moon.
2009 we took the first pictures of an object in Saturn's Rings.
