Discord scam

I wanted to post a message on here warning about a particular discord scam going around right now. Apparently it’s more and more common now.

Yesterday a friend of mine messaged me out of the blue with a “hey” message and made small talk. We hadn’t talked in months and he was typing nothing like himself. He said a friend of his was working on a video game and he was looking for beta testers, sending me a link.

For this guy, this wouldn’t be out of left field. His boyfriend spent years developing a game he’d been working on since we were back in high school which he helped develop a lot of the lore for, but this was all very weird and suspicious. I asked him to either call me or send a selfie with the date written on a piece of paper, which they failed to do.

Someone hacked his account. He had fallen for the very same scam and clicked on the link. Sure enough my other friends recognized it as well, but one of them clicked the link and now his DMs are gone, and he was kicked from every group chat he wasn’t an admin in. Fortunately me and the others didn’t buy it for a sec, but it could happen to anyone on a rough enough day where you get caught off guard. I’ve had some days where I’ve been exhausted and stressed out after work and would’ve fallen for it.

The “check out/playtest my video game” scam and a similar scam that’s common right now where they “accidentally reported you” and need you to message someone (which another friend’s hacked account tried on me) are just that: SCAMS. These are currently tactics people are using with hacked accounts to try and steal people’s information through people the victim is friends with and potentially hack their accounts too. Be on the lookout and, if this happens, do not click the link.
