Why is the border between Canada and Denmark considered invalid?

Submitted by jbro on November 11, 2025
Canada and Denmark are both on the "One Border Countries" quiz even though they share a border. Borders between French Guiana and Suriname or Brazil are counted on numerous quizzes however despite French Guiana being an overseas territory as well. Can someone enlighten me please?

You’ve answered your own question. If Canada and Denmark are both on the One-Border country quiz then JetPunk clearly doesn’t recognize it…

The border is between two countries that both only have one direct border each, the U.S. and Germany respectively. Hans Island is a tiny tiny little island. The border is actually between Canada and Greenland, which itself is a territory of Denmark. The border is not essential enough to consider.

French Guiana is often considered because of its size and relevance in geography and history. Hans island was officially declared 3 years ago with a multitude of disputes, some still ongoing. Even still, French Guiana is more than not excluded as well, because yes, it's a territory.

I've always heard that it's not included because Greenland is an overseas territory while French Guiana is not.

Hawaii isn't an overseas territory either

Because it's a state :)

French Guiana is included for the fact it's not a territory, it's a proper department. For hypothetical purposes, if the United States had a territory bordering Europe, it wouldn't be counted, but if that territory became a state, then yes that counts towards US borders.

Because Hans Island is a stupid little uninhabited rock. Some countries share little stupid rock islands in what’s called a condominium, but that also doesn’t count as a real border. In addition, do we count Passport Island? No.

We also don't technically count St. Martin Island either I think, just another little island.

It isn't inhabited, its a freaking island split 40/60, and was just the result of a stupid war

French Guiana is part of France proper, Hans island is half Canada and half Greenland, Greenland is not a country and not Denmark proper.

It's the same reason the French-Dutch border on Saint Martin isn't counted.

This is the answer. The borders of overseas territories are never considered (Gibraltar, Saint Martin, etc.).

French Guiana is an integral part of France, equal to every other department on the mainland. Greenland isn't in that kind of situation.
