First Car Suggestions

Submitted by zarodinu on April 11, 2026
I am in the market for a car. Right now I am leaning towards Crown Vic/Grand Marquis/Town Car, but any other suggestions are welcome. Only rule is it has to be less than $10k.

Crown Victorias are tough to find, would be sick if you got one

Not really. I can open facebook marketplace and find about 20 within 150 miles for sale, and for more reputable places to buy cars you can find 4 or 5 within that radius.

Ok maybe not tough to find but your point did prove that they are quite uncommon

With 3.8 million Ford Crown Victorias made from 1998-2011 it shouldn't be exactly uncommon. In fact they were used in taxi fleets.

And 2.7 Million Grand Marquis, and a few hundred thousand Lincoln Town Cars (these are all same car, just with varying levels of fanciness).

(And the fact that the Grand Marquis was made by Mercury while the Town Car was made by Lincoln.)

Yeah but that is like saying the Camaro and Firebird are the same car just because Chevrolet and Pontiac is/was owned by General Motors.

Mechanically they are built on the same frame with same engine. Mercury got discontinued for this reason- it's just slightly fancier rebranded Ford cars.

A Pontiac G6 is a car I was gonna get before I got a Pontiac Firebird. Both are pretty cheap as well.

There is actually a black one for sale down the road. I'll consider that.

Less than 10k for a car? Do those exist?

yes, that's why the crown vic is good choice- they are older but last a long time. I've looked into it and there is no reason to not get one, everybody recommends them. The only way to find one over 10k is if it has less than 50k miles on it and is in perfect condition.

My dad bought a 1985 Pontiac Firebird for $2k and spent about $5k fixing it. There are many cars that are under 10k, especially vehicles from the 80s and 90s.

I just found the perfect one. A 2000 Lincoln Town Car Cartier, 84k miles, only owned by one grandma, for sale about 15 miles from me. Is slightly pricier at $9k, but is incredible.

I'm in the UK, so I don't know about US cars, but a mechanic friend of mine always suggests, anything Japanese, especially Toyota or Honda, that has been serviced regularly. He often sees Toyota, used as taxis, that have over 300k miles and still drive like new with few problems.
