Geographic Misconceptions

Submitted by FreeStater on February 17, 2025
I was reading Syrext's latest blog, and was floored to find out that Guadalupe was not one big island, but was actually two.

I mean to create a quiz or blog based on these personal geographic misconceptions. For another, I recently found out that a 'fjord' refers to the body of water, not the cliffs or islands.

Anyone else got any more?

Actually, the entire Guadeloupe consists of around 9 islands!

A common one is that French Guiana is equivalent to Hawaii, it's not a territory.

A tragically large % of people from the mainland US fail to identify Puerto Rico as part of the US (or realize that Puerto Ricans are US citizens).

Fun fact: French Guiana is the only France territory (not in metroplitan France) to NOT be an island. It is also the largest. The other territories are Guadeloupe, Martinique, La Réunion and Mayotte.

The flights from France to French Guiana, Mayotte, Reunion, Guadeloupe and Martinique are all domestic flights not international.
