Have you visited your subdivision's capitol?

Submitted by FreeStater on November 23, 2025
Unless you live in a microstate, your first-level subdivision (state, province, etc.) ought to have a capitol building. Have you visited yours? How do you think it looks?

Went on a school trip to the Colorado State Capitol in 5th grade and got the full tour of the inside. It's really cool. Been back a lot since but only from the outside

Haven't visited Hangzhou much so there wasn't much of a reason for me to visit that of all sites there. The West Lake is full of cultural gems and I'm not even close to done exploring that.

I went to that lake a few years ago! (It took me a wile to process the English name...). My family went on a boat to an island there, and there was an excellent noodle shop... :)

Didn't eat anything by that but I do remember those evil vending machines charging 6 yuan per bottle of water...

Decided I wasn't thirsty enough that day

That's already extremely cheap compared to that prices in Australia... 6 yuan... that's 1 AUD... in Australia it's usually 3 dollars...

For context, a standard bottle of water (500 ml) usually costs no more than 3 yuan in China.

Everything is really cheap here.

Nongfu Spring goes for 2 usually although I'm not sure how much they usually sell it for in Beijing

Wow. It's cheap compared to the prices in Australia, but as a proportion on an average Chinese person's salary, it's similar, right?

Yeah it's usually similar for these minor expenses

You only really start to see major gaps in purchasing power when it comes to pricy imported products

I think they meant expensive imported goods, not Taobao which primarily sells products made in China

Google loves to gatekeep Chinese provincial government buildings. It took me a while to find a picture of Zhejiang's, and I'm still not totally confident it's the right building.

that sucks, austin is the best city in texas.

Austin > San Antonio > Round Rock > Dallas > El Paso > Houston > Corpus Christi

the last three are horrendous. i really thought i hated houston more than any other place in texas and then i went to corpus christi. midland is pretty bad too

i’m with you on san antonio. but ive actually never even met someone who likes houston. even people from houston hate houston, mostly because of the traffic and the way people drive and how ugly the city is. good food scene there i guess but the food is good everywhere in texas

Never visited the municipal government of Beijing. Or maybe I did pass by once or twice but wasn't paying attention.

I have no idea how it looks and never got to see the inside.

Passed through there yes but never visited explicitly.

In something I was running in a TTRPG system for some friends recently, I was originally going to have it take place there, and drive out there for inspiration, but I instead created a fictional city that was an obvious allegory for/parody of our own.

Quite impressive that you have enough time off to browse the JetPunk message board. ;)

That said, a quick look on Google Maps reveals a "Officer in Charge House." Maybe go pay him a visit?

Although England is a sub-division of the UK, it doesn't have it's own government or parliament building. Everything is governed as the UK, whilst Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own parliament buildings.

I have been in the Public Gallery at the Houses of Parliament in London though. It's a lot smaller than you'd think.
