How many languages do you listen to music in?

Submitted by HeyItsRose18 on May 11, 2025
Inspired by a conversation I had with someone on discord. I realize that the number of languages represented on my Spotify is most likely on the higher end (especially as someone who only speaks one language!). So I ask: how many languages do you think you listen to music in regularly? My number is roughly 26, though it does change from month to month. I'm curious to see how others compare.

For me, it's almost all English. There's some Spanish electronica and some international metal. But not much.

Partially depends on the definition we use for "language", but my main Spotify playlist has music in about 45 different languages.

I listen to a lot of music, I drive around all day at work, my playlists are quite eclectic. I will listen to anything from anywhere on one condition. That I like it. One day I can be listening to classical music from Vivaldi or Beethoven and the next day it might be Rammstein or Kylie Minogue. All depends on what sort of mood I am in.

I haven't checked how many different languages there are in my playlists, but the majority is in English, but with several European language songs mixed in, there is even some in Tamil I think, that a friend in Sri Lanka told me about.

Oh and edited to add...there are some Russian, Korean, Japanese, Gaelic, and Hindi tracks as well. All recommended by people, some even from JetPunk.

im curious... Gaelic as in traditional Old Irish (the closest thing to a 'Gaelic' parent language), or Gaelic as in Modern Irish, Manx, or Scots Gaelic?

Haha I think I didn't tell you mine on Discord. In my case, it would be English, Hindi/Urdu (yeah I consider them pretty much the same when it comes to songs), Spanish, some Korean and Punjabi.

Probably 95% of my playlist is in English but I do have a handful from other languages. Spanish and Japanese are definitely the most common but just off the top of my head I know I have Portuguese, Italian, German, Korean, Icelandic, Swedish, Algonquin, Greek, Turkish, Hungarian. There’s a couple random African ones in there too but I don’t know what language they’re actually in.
