How often do featured quizzes make the Front Page?

What really are the long-term effects of having a featured quiz? Everyone should know that featured quizzes get the most takes when they show up on the Front Page, and there is no limit to how many times a quiz can appear there. But just how often is any one featured quiz put on the FP?

At the time of writing, there are 8,819 featured quizzes in the English section. JetPunk displays 5 quizzes a day between January and September, and 6 a day between October and December. This means that any one quiz has either a 5 in 8,819 or 6 in 8,819 chance of making the FP each day, depending on the season.

From these figures, we can derive (with some knowledge of the Binomial distribution) the chances of any specific featured quiz making the FP over different time periods. They are as follows:

Weekly: 1 in 252 (Jan - Sep) / 1 in 210 (Oct - Dec)

Monthly (30 days): 1 in 59 (Jan - Sep) / 1 in 49 (Oct - Dec)

Yearly (365 days): 19.5%, taking seasonal variation into account (or about 1 in 5 chance)

Note that these calculations assume that daily FP quizzes are chosen completely at random, which may not always actually be the case. But it should give you a rough idea of what to expect with your featured quizzes making the FP.

(By the way, does anyone know who or what gets to decide which quizzes to put on the FP each day?)

Interesting stuff!

I don't really know how the frontpage works but my best guess would be moderators have some kind of way to edit the page for future dates

Well, there's an algorithm that chooses which quizzes appear on the front page. QM may select certain quizzes to appear on the FP if say it's a certain holiday or a certain theme is particularly relevant for that day. Otherwise, I believe the algorithm selects a quiz to appear based on things such as its number of takes and rating (so if a featured quiz happens to have a rating below say 3.5 or something it's probably incredibly unlikely or even impossible to be selected by the algorithm). If I'm not mistaken, it also doesn't choose a quiz that's been on the FP in the last 6 months.

The algorithm isn’t just QM’s brain?

I would presume he has some sort of algorithm to take away from the necessity of picking quizzes every day.

It's likely a bit of both.

this algorithm is only for non-english, QM chooses all quizzes manually for English

Wow, really? That seems like a lot of work

Yep. Technically it would work, but QM always has the schedule filled up well in advance. I think he really enjoys the organisation side of it.

One thing I noticed is that almost everyday a recently featured quiz is on the FP.

That's the idea. My assumption is that it takes an average of a few weeks to a month for any one featured quiz to hit the FP. It all depends on what QM wants, and how he knows other featured quizzes are going to play out on the FP.

I don't know how common it is for "old" featured quizzes to return to the FP. I see it happen all the time with the highest-ranked users, so it's probably just a draw-people-in-for-the-takes kinda deal.

I imagine there's a "queue" of some sort with featured quizzes. Once a new quiz gets featured, it is put into the queue waiting to make the FP.

Same thing with spotlights, new spotlighted quizzes enter a queue waiting to be put on the User Spotlight.

That would explain why new featured quizzes take a month or so to reach the frontpage. Planning the frontpage for the future month or so makes sense

Yeah, seen that before.

Also, on January 19th (MLK Jr day in the US) this year there was an extra quiz on the FP. Do they always do this on important holidays outside of the October to December season? Just curious.

(MeMeMe told me the other day he thinks QM was trying something new, but I'm not sure if that's really the case or not although they didn't seem to do this last year)
