How to Express Gratitude For a Gift You Don't Really Like

Submitted by Nickelz on December 10, 2025
Hello, Life Coach Nickelz here. I've returned with another sporadic lesson for you all.

The Christmas season is fast-approaching, and as such, I feel that it is appropriate to share with you some ways to politely express gratitude for a gift that you don't really like very much. It's not good to hurt people's feelings, and as they say, it's the thought that counts.

Therefore, here are some ways you can express gratitude for an unwanted gift.

🎁 Thank you. I appreciate greatly the mental energy it must have taken to convince yourself that I would like this gift.

🎁 In an ever-fluctuating world such as this one, consistency is something that we all take for granted. I'm glad that I can always count on you to give me a gift that I will never use.

🎁 This gift would pair amazingly with... a receipt!

🎁 It seems that when I told you that your new girlfriend was cute, you interpreted that to mean that I like everything that's ugly. Thank you for being so considerate!

🎁 Energy costs are through the roof right now. Every piece of kindling counts. Thanks!

🎁 Given the status of your personal affairs right now... I'm grateful that you got me anything, even if it is... this.

🎁 I have always admired that you don't care about what anybody thinks... even if it's about the gifts you get for them. I appreciate you for staying true to yourself!

🎁 Usually, when I get gifts for people, I have to ask myself: is this something I would want as a gift, or something they would want as a gift? I assume the former option was true in this case. Would you like me to give this back?

Thanks for tuning in, and comment below if you would like me to do a specialized lesson on a topic of your choice! :)

How much does this lesson cost? :)

Also, could I learn how to accept praise from other people properly without being feeling awkward or something?

Ah Nickelz, my favourite (and frankly, only) life coach

The season I (un)passionately dub as 'visiting the countless Indonesian aunties, uncles and grandparents' is around the corner. I beg for thy assistance in informing my family to please get me the heck out of there, as I have the social battery of an unused sponge. Don't know why I used that metaphor.

Good humour there - I thought it was a sincere post at first.

There is certainly a lot of junk out there, and I think it would be good to get away from the culture of gifts. Think of the amount of plastic rubbish and environmental waste.

I still hope people have a merry time, though.

I was going to have a merry time until I saw your comment.

Just kidding, but like other environmental issues, it's a very concerning and depressing matter. I think we'd better not get into this, since this post (and this site in general) is meant to be light-hearted.

Can confirm, these tactics work better the more expensive the gift is
