I was recently looking back on a conversation I had with some coworkers a few years back. I want to hear what your thoughts are.
If you got to spend a few days in each of the six inhabited continents, which country would you visit? What is your reasoning?
I’ll go first:
- North America- Cuba. The history there has always fascinated me, and I’ve known people who’ve went. Lots of cool cars, beautiful beaches, great cigars. Plus I’ve passed by Cuba’s shores, and have physically seen the country’s coast, but have never been. There are also a lot of places in the US and Canada that are up there on my list.
- South America- Ecuador, namely the Galápagos Islands. From a wildlife perspective, it’d be the trip of a lifetime.
- Africa- Tanzania. Specifically would like to see the Serengeti/Zanzibar. Cape Town and Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa are both also breathtaking, wouldn’t mind going back someday. 10/10 would recommend.
- Europe- Türkiye. Istanbul is an incredible city, and is divided between Europe and Asia, so I’m using it for my Europe slot. Would definitely check out the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque and try all kinds of cool street food.
- Asia- Bhutan. Lots of options to choose from, tough to pick. It hurts not putting Japan or Thailand here. Except, in this scenario, all expenses are paid, and it’s such a tough country to get to with such a rewarding beauty, it would be an epic trip like no other.
- Oceania- Australia. Between diverse landscapes and cool wildlife (see South America) to cities like Sydney, Australia has a lot to offer. French Polynesia (France), Vanuatu, and New Zealand were all other contenders.
Europe - Iceland -
It is farthest from EuropeIt is beautifulAsia - Cyprus -
It will be destroyed hahaI wanna see what goes on thereOceania - Australia - Messing with the koalas and the kangaroos
Also MeMeMe333 lives thereAfrica - Uganda - I know some people from there
South America - Ecuador - Galapagos Penguins
Europe - Iceland - I don't like europe
Asia - Cyprus - It is weird and I don't understand it
Oceania - Australia - I'm a big fan of Sam Jones and MeMeMe333
Africa - Uganda - I know someone from there (I can't really change this one)
South America - Ecuador - I want to watch an animal stand and maybe eat (penguins can't be that interesting, can they?)
Europe: Cyprus
Asia: Cyprus
South America: Cyprus
North America: Cyprus
Center of the D###ed Sun: Cyprus
For example, if you go out in Arusha (a common stopover point to Kilimanjaro/Serengeti) you will be absolutely mobbed by people wanting money. Most of them were quite friendly, but they are extremely aggressive. This was despite us having a guide.
In Latin America, you will be a target for theft or robbery. I've had money stolen there. So have my parents. From the hotel safe no less.
Turkey is considerably safer, but tourists are definitely the target of scams anywhere near the major tourist sites. It starts with someone offering tourist advice, and then ends with you buying a $5000 rug with the implication of violence if you say no. I'm pretty certain I saw two women being taken advantage of in this way.
Not that these can't be great vacations, they can be!
But, as I get older, I prefer places where I don't have to be on guard.
Here's the difference. In Turkey, tourists are specifically targeted for scams. In the US, most of the worst crime is gang violence that a tourist would be unlikely to experience.
But I agree that crime is far too high in parts of US and I wouldn't recommend to a tourist to ride public transit in Chicago, for example.
As a man, I never felt unsafe in Turkey, but I didn't appreciate the many, many attempts to scam me.
i'm really not sure why people think that modern public transit in the United States is some kind of disgusting hellish nightmare where you're going to get assaulted or robbed. sure, the public transit isn't very good in this country, but most major cities have cleaned up their transit systems significantly in the past few decades. the days of the god-awful 70s-80s new york subway are long gone.
i blame videos from the new york subway that go viral because they're weird. for what it's worth, i took the subways in boston and new york a lot and they were clean and quiet for the most part
That's great. I'd still advise tourists to exercise caution. On my last trip to Chicago I took the train and saw an insane man screaming obscenities and threats. Another man next to me showed me his switchblade, saying how he would stab the crazy guy if necessary.
Recently, on the train, a young woman was set on fire by a man with 74 previous arrests who had just been released by an activist judge.
People shouldn't be afraid to visit Chicago, but do your research first. Don't be naive.
Statistics shows that states like North Dakota, Arkansas, and Idaho don't lock their doors the most source
As a woman, you’re even more aware of safety, and that dictates a lot of your decisions. Most women end up sending extra money when travelling because of this factor.
Bhutan, which I’ve been to, is quiet, safe, and incomplicated. It’s worth visiting more because of its culture than scenic beauty. Punakha Fort is 😍
It’s in the eastern Himalayas, and hence tends to be overcast most of the time. Nepal, Kashmir and Ladakh give you more scenic beauty, per rupee spent, in general, in comparison.
- North America: the United States. I love this land so much, there's great food, natural beauty, stunning architecture, interesting history, friendly people, and just about everything you could want. The only downside is the country's size, especially since we're given just a few days.
- South America: Chile. Pure natural beauty.
- Europe: Sweden. The cities look really nice, and of course the country is adorned with beautiful forests. I have a lot of Swedish ancestry, too.
- Africa: Egypt. I've always dreamed of seeing all the ancient ruins out there.
- Asia: Russia. Siberia is possibly the most beautiful region on Earth. Of course, we run into the same size issue as the United States.
- Oceania: Palau. It's a really unappreciated country that would be interesting to visit just because of how unique it is. I could hit up most of the states within a day, and also check out that jellyfish lake.
South America: Peru. Heard it's nice there.
Europe: Iceland. Unlike anything else.
Africa: Egypt surely.
Asia: Singapore.
Oceania: New Zealand. McKenzieFam will be waiting at the airport.
North America: Mexico
South America: Brazil
Europe: Maybe Spain or Germany?
Africa: Egypt
Asia: India, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, idk
Oceania: Aus
Antarctica: South Pole
Europe - Denmark or the Netherlands, wanna experience that great urbanism. Maybe Switzerland for the trains, but also Switzerland is a morally bankrupt nation and I don't want to support that
Asia - Absolutely China. Chongqing might be the most incredibly city humanity has ever devised
Oceania - New Zealand, without a doubt, Auckland looks cool and Kiwis & Māori are some of the most awesome people ever
Africa - Madagascar, my cousin served a mission there and he said it's an incredible place. He also learned how to speak Malagasy very well so he'd be able to take me around
South America - Argentina, specifically the Patagonia region. I love natural splendor
South America - Peru. Peru.
Africa - Seychelles. I did a presentation on the Seychelles in Year 6, got into it due to my mass consumption of Jack Sucks at Geography content
Europe - Poland. Great history, will not be able to understand anything
Asia - SINGAPORE! I can visit a bunch of my old friends
Oceania - Australia. I don't have to go anywhere. If not, New Zealand
(I say I don't care who the president is or how they do it that isn't affecting the US Constitution, just that the crime rate goes down and people stop losing lives)
South America: Chile, because I want to see giant moai statues
Africa: Madagascar, I would love to see the wildlife there
Europe: Italy, because the food there is great and it seems like a beautiful place
Asia: Japan, I would want to see how Tokyo looks in person
Oceania: Australia, because it has deserts, beaches, wildlife, cities, JetPunkers, and pretty much everything
South America - Peru
Africa - Egypt
Europe - Germany
Asia - Indonesia
Oceania - Australia
South America - ? Peru or Ecuador?
Africa - Mauritius or Seychelles, because they are small island countries (I saw a kid wearing a shirt saying 'Proud to be Mauritian' the other day, with a Mauritius flag, so why not?)
Europe - Germany or something. I might go in a few years.
Asia - Taiwan. I'm part Taiwanese and I've only been to China (and Hong Kong), but never Taiwan :(
Oceania - Stay home in Australia (I dislike travelling), or New Zealand.
South America: Toss between Chile and Argentina
Europe:Italy.
Africa: South Africa or Morocco or the Seychelles or Madagascar or Tanzania. This one’s tough!
Asia: it’s a toss between Japan and China.
Oceania: Australia.
Between Morocco (for food and Mediterranean culture) and Tanzania (for nature) for Africa
Between France, Italy, and Russia for Europe
China in Asia easily because there's a lot I'm yet to visit in my own country. China aside I'll probably be putting Japan or Turkey at the top.
South America - Peru or more specifically Machu Picchu.
Europe - One of the few places I haven't been , Iceland or Svalbard, either or would be OK.
Africa - I've been to the south and the north so it would have to be somewhere central or outlying. Probably looking at Sao Tome or Kenya.
Asia - 100% Japan, I've wanted to go there since I was a teenager.
Oceania - Definitely New Zealand
Plus many other places I would like to go that I know I never will. South Georgia, Vladivostok, North Korea, and Easter Island come to mind.
South america - brazil
Oceania - new zealand
Asia - uae
Africa - botswana
Europe - sweden
Antarctica - antarctica
