JetPunkers are surprisingly bad at pinpointing oceans?

Submitted by ChaoticV on May 10, 2026
I randomly decided to check the stats on my most popular quiz, https://www.jetpunk.com/user-quizzes/2482974/5-oceans-map-quiz and I saw that only 73% got the Southern Ocean correct, which in my mind was surprisingly low. For reference, on https://www.jetpunk.com/quizzes/islands-a-z which got reset recently, 79% got Key West which has got to be more obscure than the Southern Ocean. Uh yeah, this was a little observation I noticed.

Apparently, there are many people that enjoy learning and guessing countries, US states and their capitals, which is an accomplishment itself, but frequently oversee other aspects of geography (especially physical geography) and map reading, and that seems to be JetPunk's target audience, particularly the younger users that might branch out their knowledge if they keep their interests.

Also, some 20 odd years ago, we were still taught at school that there are 3 oceans on Earth.

The number of oceans in the world is ambiguous. When I was in elementary school, we were taught that there were four oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic, and Indian. Really, all these "individual" oceans are just the regions of the one large ocean that makes up most of Earth's surface. People don't tend to care as much about the names of the oceans as there are so few and it's constantly changing.

That’s interesting because in this quiz, it’s still very highly guessed, though it does have the lowest percentage. And what’s perhaps most interesting is that you have to pinpoint the ocean yourself without borders (unless you’ve already located the others).

I find that actual geographical features seem to be ignored. For example, I couldn't point out where the Baltic Sea is. I just know it's in Europe. Probably.

Update, I learned where the Baltic Sea is.

Also, since your quiz isn't featured, I have a feeling more people are playing to learn the oceans, rather than to get points.

you don't have the type-in "antarctic", that's why
