Lost Comment Threads

I noticed that the second most upvoted comment on the site is gone. When a user’s account is deleted, their comments disappear. Does the entire thread get deleted? If so, it might make sense to save comments from deleted users and just convert the name of the post to “anonymous user” or something. At least if it’ll delete a whole thread.
