New Canadian Prime Minister

Submitted by Dimby on March 9, 2025
There’s a new Canadian prime minister: Mark Carney (or at least he will be when the Governor General swears him in). His tenure might be extremely short lived, though. An election will likely happen very, very soon. I wonder if he’ll even make it into a JetPunk quiz (aside from the list of all Canadian PMs).

When will the election happen? Should I bother updating the Prime Ministers quiz right away?

The election has to happen by October, but can be called early if the pm and cooperating parties agree, or if the other parties force it. The NDP generally doesn’t want the Conservatives to do well, so I imagine that the Liberals will try to get as much popularity as possible in the next couple months and use anti-Trump sentiments as a springboard to try to hold onto power. Carney might manage to actually hold on, but you might as well wait a month to update the quiz, since Poilievre could potentially be PM in a few months. And then you might want to hold off updating the CotW quiz for a bit, since he might try to make us join the USA. 😂

I'll update it since it sounds unlikely that there will be an election right away and the quiz hasn't been updated since 2015!

One thing about British politics that seems crazy to me is that elections aren't held on fixed dates. It gives the party in power a huge advantage.

This is true. Trudeau has strategically called elections to time the ebbs and flows of the LP’s popularity. Theoretically, the head of state is supposed to prevent shenanigans. In reality, the Governor General does basically nothing.

Curious to see how Carney does. I've literally got his book on my bookshelf behind me. He seems determined to defy Trump completely which could be an interesting strategy, but seems to be paying off in the polls.

I'm worried that if Canada gets too aggressive in this, provinces might shut off electricity to the USA. That could mean invasion. :(
