UPDATE: Increased number of archive pages from 10 to 50.
UPDATE: Added language selector panel as an option for all users and a default options for users outside of US/UK/Ireland/Australia/New Zealand.
UPDATE: Added "New and Reset Quizzes" as a default useful link and added an option to this as a panel as well.
You should be able to easily change languages from the menu under "Languages".
Coming soon, we'll detect if a user comes from a non-English country and allow a method directly from the home page.
But we haven't meaningfully changed the front page in like 10 years.
Can you share what you don't like about the new format?
I also kinda feel like the left side is a bit more empty? Prolly bc the DTC and Puzzle are smaller. Also minigames
But I feel it is a change for the better, only that I wished it would be optional (or only for signed in users)
ps. I feel "start your learning adventure" would turn off people that are specifically here to procrastinate from learning and enjoy trivia, i feel it'l make people think this is terraset or smth
But we will be adding more language options when appropriate for a user's geolocation.
Customization is always nice to have, but I don't think adding it was all that necessary. There wasn't too much clutter on the front page in the first place.
Still, the front page looks quite nice now.
Would be amazing if the languages are visible again in the main page to change between them
Just one thing, as others have mentioned, it would be good to have the other languages linked on the frontpage, as that would be more intuitive than having to go to the menu, and draw more attention to them.
Also the pannels are a bit large i think.
I'd recommend adding a bookmark by going to Menu -> Bookmark. I might just make this a default link.
As a user who plays in 2 languages, it also slows down the experience, I preferred having the language table.
I also feel that having one column instead of 2 makes the page emptier
I love the Useful Links idea.
Will see if I have any complaints using it in the next days.
Anyway: big congrats for the efforts put into this new page!
It will take me a couple of days to get used to the layout but that's not a problem.
To all the naysayers....Change isn't always a bad thing!
Customization is a good idea. My biggest impression so far is a surprise to me. I wouldn't have expected to care much about the list of recommended quizzes, but I'll probably use it regularly, due to the algorithm and the visibility. When I take a couple quizzes on a particular theme, I tend to take other quizzes on the same theme.
My biggest concern leading up to the redesign was that the Daily Trivia Challenge would be less prominent, becoming less popular and possibly extinct. I'd hate to see the DTC go away. It's become my favorite feature of the site. (I still prefer the original name, by the way... see above comment about not liking change).
I’m not sure how visible you want it to be- maybe that’s not a major issue if it’s doing well. I did have one idea, though. You already have Jeppy in the trivia box. If he moved just slightly in a swimming motion, that could draw some attention and get some clicks. The Duolingo home page has the kind of animation I’m thinking about.
I do think the DTC can be helpful at retaining in new users. My wife and my daughter play it a lot, and they didn’t use the site regularly before that.
Personally I believe that user created quizzes is a very important aspect of JetPunk.
I hope the changes don't lead to less people playing the new user created quizzes.
Helpful hint. On desktop, you can always hit Ctrl+Shift+R to go to a random quiz! This works on any page.
It's such a useful feature that we actually remind you of this every time we load a random quiz!
You did fine with the update, though some things can definitely come anew, like feature settings for old UI feel, or even a toggle for quiz-filters to only show quizzes that [person] has not done yet.
With that out of the way, great work!
Overall, I appreciate the work put into it and the functionality of the layout but it feels over engineered, if that makes any sense. This might just be my graphic designer instincts kicking in, but it's very busy. All the thumbnails of the quizzes combined with the ads and the text makes quite the happening layout.
There's also the fact that words naturally don't align, so it creates a false sense of chaos. There's information everywhere, and I feel it could be condensed into boxes, hyperlinks, or maybe even a grid list.
I'd love to submit some design layout ideas if you're open to it- my general thoughts are that there's just information and photos everywhere and no space.
This is a very impressive design- web design is something I will never understand how to do well, and you guys revamped the site fabulously while retaining the important aspects. Thank you guys! Jetpunk's look is so iconic :)
If you want to send me a design mockup I'd be happy to take a look.
Full disclosure, there there's probably a small chance we'd use it. Just, off the cuff, maybe a 30% chance we'd use any of it and a 10% chance we'd use most of it.
I wouldn't want to waste your time or create disappointment, as there may be be practical considerations that might not be obvious.
Keep in mind that we need ads to keep the site running. Reducing the ads is a non-starter since we already have fewer ads than 95% of similar sites. (Check out our competitor to see what I mean!).
So, yeah, I'm open to design help, just wanted to be totally honest.
I see the desktop page design bc I have the desktop mode on right now but I'll check it on an actual desktop later to see what I've missed, sorry.
Thanks.
Otherwise, its alright, maybe make the language tile more prevalent and not have to scroll down half the page to find it or the other customizable tiles.
Missing out on some great quizzes that deserve noms and potential features.
I only have one suggestion: it seems a bit empty to me at the right of the welcoming message and the DTC and DWS boxes. Wouldn't it be possible to maybe put the tree planting partner message and a box to the US State Puzzle, Geography Snap or JetPunk minigames in general there?
I used a lot the Random feature but I much prefer this new addition. Having 5 recommended (and not taken) quizzes is just perfect. Thanks!
if you take ONLY recommended quizzes, the suggested list logically shrink, leading to less than 5 quizzes to be proposed in the end.
Would it be possible that the set of data automatically refuels?
I did add a bit more randomness so hopefully you won't see the same quizzes over and over.
In the listed languages greek appears as e λληνικά and not ε λληνικά...
