New JetPunk Language?

Submitted by jbro on November 2, 2025
We currently have 9 featured languages here on JetPunk, the most recent one added being Finnish all the way back in 2021. This begs the question:

1. Why has it been 4 years since the last featured language was added?

2. and why has a new one not been added?

There are plenty of options:

Turkish

Romanian

Norwegian

Just to name a few

Quizmaster, do you have any plans to add a new language? I think it would be great for many JetPunkers and would add something new and fun. Keep me posted.

True. And we already have a charity initiative.

People don't realize that we actually lose money on some countries. Norway is profitable but...

1) Population is smaller than most U.S. states

2) Everyone there speaks perfect English

3) Revenue/user still less than half the U.S.

Of course, I don't know/didn't think of much of the money issues surrounding this idea. I just think adding a new language would be cool. Of course now I understand much of the problems possibly surrounding that.

How many would use that language? Probably only a few. At this point, any languages QM adds would just mainly be there for our pleasure and wont get much use out of it

Now add Chinese or an Indian language...

Wait. I'm not sure if adding Chinese is a good idea...

Romanization (maybe not), variant characters, variation in vocab, etc. A lot of problems to tackle for a relatively small audience.

For mouse (the computer peripheral) alone, you need to accept 鼠标 鼠標 滑鼠 (and shubiao, huashu if you add romanization in) and maybe more im not aware of.

The same simplified character can also correspond to multiple traditional characters. (e.g. 发 - 髪 / 發)

You get the point

As well as the money side, adding a new language is actually a monumental amount of work, and having somebody who is perfectly fluent in both that language and English to spend hundreds of hours building up the section is just not possible in most cases. It also requires a massive time commitment from myself (as I run the non English sections) and I can't commit that nowadays.

Yes, most of the foreign languages on the site are because of Stewart's hard work and the volunteers he recruits to do the actual translation.

Back in 2013, I made the first section (French) which included many quizzes I translated myself as a beginning French speaker.

Obviously, things have been improved a lot since then. Today we get nearly as much traffic from France as we do from the U.S. But... we make more than 10x as much revenue from our U.S. traffic.

There is actually zero business case for any non-English languages. But we maintain it as a service to our users.
