No More Pennies

Submitted by ATLFalconsFan on November 12, 2025
I'm sure some of you already know about this but earlier today the U.S mint in Philadelphia created the last penny. There will be no more pennies created anymore. Pennies will still be in circulation but no new ones will be created.

I thought this was an interesting event that happened today and no one had created a thread about it so I decided to make one.

I have at least 25 Wheat Pennies from 1920-1951 and 2 Indian Head Penny (1885 and 1907). I am a coin collector

Good. I will miss the penny but the cost of making one is over triple (around 4 pennies) the amount of the value of the penny, it is just not a good investment. I will start keeping all of the pennies I own and maybe they will become more valuable later in life.

The penny is practically useless because of our plastic money. I think this will eventually be a good thing, but will of course come with its set of problems. I have always liked to pay with cash when I can, but plastic is the future so we must respect it. No need for 1 cent these days.

I wonder if removing the penny will eventually be more expensive than continuing making it, because you’d now have to round all prices to 5 cents. Then, you’d have to print more nickels, and that could costly.

I’m no mathematician but I’m interested in seeing the numbers.

Canada got rid of the penny like 15 years ago. We just round to the nickel.

To be fair, because of the Metric system, a Canadian penny is only worth 1/16th of a U.S. penny.

I’m confused, are you referring to the price it cost to mint each of the US and Canadian pennies or was that a joke?

Well we have metric pennies while the US’s pennies were based on the farthing system. Of course, the penny farthing era is over, but Americans kept the more valuable Imperial penny anyway,

Well now I’m more confused.

Perhaps this was a joke (about nail units)?

Because both the US penny (just discontinued) and the Canadian penny (discontinued in 2012) signified 0.01 of a “dollar”. And the US-Canadian exchange rate isn’t 1:16 nor is it 16:1.

Just a question, will they eventually cost more than coins with the face of Queen Elizabeth in Australia and other Commonwealth countries?

it's only 1 cent lol, US currency isn't that magical

no one is going to care about pennies in the future, that's my prediction.

Older pennies (like 1960 and before) will more likely get more attention

the only decision this admin has made that i’m personally a fan of. these useless coins have been costing the govt money for too long. they should honestly do away with nickels and maybe even dimes atp. should also stop printing $1 paper banknotes, they don’t last as long as dollar coins and therefore dollar coins are a better value over the long run

The UK stopped using £1 notes in 1988 in favour of £1 coins for this very reason.

the US govt tried to phase out $1 bills and replace them with dollar coins circa 2008, but the way they did it was terrible

instead of just ceasing the printing of the paper bills, they started a buyback program where people could buy the dollar coins at face value

people immediately took advantage of this by buying thousands of dollars worth of dollar coins on credit cards to get airline points, then paid off the debt using the coins they bought

Pennies are still legal tender, just to curb any potential misinformation in this comment section. :)

With 250-300 Billion of them in circulation (way more than what is needed)

if you pay someone with a penny they'll probably look at you funny. Pennies are given as change, not really used in transactions. I've exchanged rolls of pennies for dollars, that's the only reason why I keep pennies lol. They are meaningless by themselves, but together they become an all mighty dollar.

I'm not that big of a coin collector but this certainly sucks. Farewell, pennies. I shall stash you all in a spot somewhere in my house.

I mean, they cost 4 of them to make 1. Not a very smart investment. It sucks to lose an American icon but all good things come to an end.

I think we are moving towards cashless society which is not a great thing.

I think we were always moving towards that, but discontinuing the penny was not a step to that. It simply cost 4 pennies to make one singular penny. We are running out of cheaper material to match its face value (The last pennies were mainly made out of Zinc and not Copper)
