How should I determine the amount of time to give on the quizzes I make?

Generally I'd always rather there be more time than necessary than less, no one's gonna complain that a quiz has too much time unless time is a key factor relating to the quiz, i.e. it's a speedtyping quiz or something where having more time makes it way too easy.

So just play test your quiz once, and adjust the time around how long it takes you.

So if I took 2 minutes to complete my own quiz I'd probably give the actual quiz at least 5 minutes.

Well it depends on what your goal of the quiz is, do you want people to test their knowledge or do you want them to guess as many answers as possible? For example if you're making a quiz on top 10 US states, it's good to assume most JetPunkers know all the states so you want the time to pressure quiz takers to guessing plausible answers to your quiz prompt rather than naming all the states they know. But you also want to allow for some thinking time aside from just answer typing time, you already know all the correct answers, your quiz takers don't.

Agree it depends on the type of quiz. On “name a lot of cities” kind of quizzes I usually use 10 per minute as a good base time, but if you’re expecting them to actually read clues that would have to increase by a lot - I usually do 4-5 minutes for a 20 question quiz when there are actual hints

think of how many seconds it would take to think of and type each question, maybe play it thru urself
