I'm also getting annoyed with every day the comments about it being "too America centric", or even "too Anglo centric".
It's impossible to make a quiz that appeals to everyone, and I am already rejecting 50% of questions I'd like to use in an effort to appeal to a broader audience.
In any case, I see a couple options.
1) Stop making Daily Trivia
2) Geofence daily trivia to US only. This would make it easier to write and barely reduce our revenue. It would also cut down on complaints by a lot.
But I just don't see how we can go on with the current status quo.
Thoughts?
Edit: We're going to keep it! People love it and not everything has to make money. I'm also going to take Dimby's suggestion and open it to non logged-in users. For my own sanity, I am going to institute a zero tolerance policy on complaints of US or Anglocentrism.
I'm thinking maybe it would be best to just drop themes for the most part, and just find any 10 questions submitted you think are good, even if they are similar to some used awhile ago.
However, if there is an option to make it specifically for U.S. users, then I would vote for that option rather than full deletion. I still use it, and I know many other people adore it as well.
The short answer, QM, is that whatever you do will bear no financial impact, unless you really need that $7! An hour per dollar is not exactly a great or reasonable ROI.
How many people, on average, play the Daily Trivia? How many are based in the US?
If not many people are playing it, then you look at option 1 right away. How you quantify "many" is, of course, subjective, but if it is only a few, you may reason that it's worth temporarily upsetting a vocal minority for 7 hours of your life back!
If it's a significant number and the vast majority come from the US, then you look at option 2. "Geofencing" to US only will reduce complaints in the sense that everyone knows where they stand, but you also risk alienating non-US users. Depending on the numbers, that might be a risk worth taking.
Could you maybe do a Weekend Trivia instead? That would mean you have only 52 to do, rather than 365.
1. USA - 30.0%
2. UK - 17.1%
3. Canada - 5.4%
4. France - 4.7%
5. Australia - 4.4%
6. Germany - 4.2%
Followed by Netherlands, Brazil, Italy and Poland.
Even if you ringfence by language, English is still only 70%, with French and German pulling up behind.
I know! It's not meant to. It's an English language quiz.
If USA is 30% of traffic, it's probably 80% of revenue. Sitewide, US is about 70% of revenue. English language content is 92%.
But I suppose it's silly to talk about revenue on a feature that delivers almost no revenue.
A bit like what happened to Word Search
Maybe a way to make it more taken would he to maybe make it count for streaks ? That way more people would take it.
But i really hope daily trivia isnt taken down
You could, however, advertise the DTC at the top of the quizzes, switching out the JetPunk Premium ads at the top of every quiz every few quizzes or so. This would be better advertising than the trivia question you immediately scroll past to get to the comments, if you ever do check the comments.
Please archive it in some way though 🙏
a) 67
b) 67
c) 67
d) 67
Did you know that an octopus has three hearts?
Now the DTC may not provide much revenue on it's own, but how many others are taking it as a part of their visit. Does that create more revenue?
If the DTC is changed to just US, then I will miss it, but It's not the end of the world. I'm happy with whatever happens for the good of the site.
Also the constant America-centric/Anglo-centric complaints have always been annoying and unfair. As an American, the geo-fencing doesn't really affect me but I'm sure plenty of non-Americans would be upset for the same reasons I would be
You could, however, add more interesting features to DTC which are only available via daily trivia (like analytics or something), but that might just create more work (and income) for it, I guess.
Please don't remove it, though!!!
Also, I don't understand what geo-fencing is, but I'd prefer if not all of the questions are about USA - I'd be fine with American spelling or vocabulary, though.
Also, the features for DTC Premium could be small like it remembers what you chose so when you look over the answers you can see if you got the question right or not - or something like that
I appreciate all the effort you've put into the Trivia, even if it must be removed. :(
If you end up removing it, it'll suck but I won't miss it very much. Many people have come up with solutions but if it's removed, I won't be protesting about it.
In other words, it sounds like it's become more of a hassle, and you should allocate your time more efficiently for your own sake.
It's a bit sad that every hand-made daily project has to come to an end eventually (it happened to Word Search before), but completely understandable.
I can't express how glad I am because of this!!! Just remember to make a note that you won't tolerate 'Too US-centric' complaints and stuff.
If you need, I'm sure plenty of people in the JP community are willing to help if you need a break or something (seriously, an hour a day is a lot of time and effort!)
