Streak freeze?

Submitted by Quizmaster on August 15, 2025
My friend pestered me to add the streaks feature also thinks I should also a "streak freeze" feature that lets you miss a day and keep your streak alive, as long as you have earned a streak freeze.

Apparently, it's one of the ways that Duolingo increases engagement on the site. In fact, on Duolingo, it's pretty tough to lose your streak. I think I finally lost mine when I didn't log in for like two weeks straight.

I don't know, though. It feels a bit weird. I like the strictness of JetPunk streaks. But maybe we could allow some streak freezing?

What do people think?

I dont think thats necessary, since it removes the point of a streak.

But how will we be able to get streak freezes ?

To be honest, no, I think this kind of defeats the purpose of a streak, though I love the idea of getting a reward for streak milestones. The one many have suggested is getting a spotlight award which I think would be quite cool, though it would have to be received at a big milestone (ex: every 250 days).

Also I had this suggestion for streaks in a message board post I made a bit ago where taking the Daily Challenge extends your streak, do you think it would be a good idea to implement this?

Giving a spotlight every 200 days is a fantastic idea. It could drive up engagement!

I agree with both of these suggestions. I'm a streak purist. My current Duolnigo streak is 164, but that includes two automatic freezes. Doesn't mean that much to me. However, my streak on the MyFitnessPal app is up to 2,255. No freezes. It would be heartbreaking to see that one end.

I'm sure Duolingo has reasons and research to back up their methods, but I vote for keeping it strict. Personal preference.

I agree with the DTC idea but I don't really see why streaks should award something like a spotlight award. I don't see the link. It doesn't really make sense to me.

As a person that doesn't care about the streaks now, and won't after a possible change, the moment you add a streak freeze it's no longer a streak, even if it's hard to get one it's still dumb, I don't think anyone that doesn't care about streaks now, will care if the streak freeze system is strict, and if it's lenient not only it punishes all the people that worked hard for their long streaks earlier, but also makes them much less impressive and cool to strive to.

I’d say maybe allow a streak freeze if you schedule it in advance? No Internet during religious observances seems like a good reason to give leeway.

Maybe a Lent mode/vacation mode that lets you pause your streak for a specified number of days, but it prevents you from taking quizzes during that time. That way if you know you're going to be unable to use JetPunk ahead of time you're able to keep your streak.

Having a streak freeze as an option would make my very high streak not as cool.

I do like what Maxibon said above: "The one many have suggested is getting a spotlight award which I think would be quite cool, though it would have to be received at a big milestone (ex: every 250 days)."

I think would be pretty cool, but I don't think people should be able to get until a certain streak number (such as 150 to start with). And then maybe after that do it every 150 days (150, 300, 450, 600, 750, 900, 1050 etc.).

Also, as a separate thought: It'd be pretty awesome if we could see other people's streaks on their public profiles.

No. Streaks aren't the point.

I think the hardcore JPers are going to be opposed to the streak freeze. I agree. It feels cheap to keep my streak on Duolingo or the Linkedin games (yes I play the Linkedin games) when I miss a day.

However, in terms of increasing engagement and keeping new users here, which I think is ultimately what you're going for and I understand that, the important question is: Do streaks seem to increase engagement/traffic flow in the first place? If they seem to be helping JetPunk, then I imagine users that come back every day to keep their streak would be more likely to keep coming back if they see their streak didn't go away when they forgot about JetPunk for a day.

Maybe you can earn streak freezes by doing something like earning a badge or progressing every 5 or 10 levels (maybe every level once you get to higher levels) or even getting 100% or 5/5 points on a certain quiz or I don't know the list could go on. I don't like the idea of being able to get tons of streak freezes, but maybe like an opportunity that would be possible every few weeks/months or something might suffice.

I think exactly the same, streaks help new people to play more

Maybe instead of actual streak freezes like Duolingo, you could have a sort of pseudo streak freeze where if your streak is higher than x number of days then you can go y number of days without playing and not lose your streak. For example, if you keep a streak of 30 days and you miss a day, you wouldn't lose your streak.

No streak freeze what so ever in my opinion. However, as others have said, it would be cool if streaks were more incentivized whether through being able to see it on someone's profile or a badge next to their name with a color corresponding to the streak, etc.

I'm not too sure on the idea of streak freezes... In my opinion, it isn't (too) hard to lose your streak. Yet in duolingo, streak freezes are earned, by completing quest or such, or buying with money. It will add an all-too-complicated part of JetPunk, and will also make it a bit to gameified, in my opinion. JetPunk will probably be better off as a fun educational tool, rather than a game to drag people on for hours.

Very late to reply... I just saw this thread.

I don't like the idea of freezing the streak. The rigor required to keep the streak alive is good imho.

Not everything has to be easy, even if technology tends to pretend otherwise.
