Use of AI in quiz thumbnails - it will get better

Submitted by Quizmaster on September 10, 2025
People have noticed some of the thumbnails on featured quizzes have been generated with AI.

In general, people HATE this.

But things will get better.

The first AI thumbnails were generated with Dall-E 2 in 2022. This was the first decent image generation tool. At the time, no one noticed the AI thumbnails because most people had never seen them.

But Dall-E 2 was honestly very bad. It took like 50 tries to get anything decent.

Dall-E 3 was released in 2023 and was a lot better. You could generally get a useable image after just a few tries. But it had a certain "stink" to it. All the images were super cluttered. We used it for a few quizzes but it got old fast. Here's an example of a Dall-E 3 image.

Dall-E was later merged into GPT 4-o and this version was better yet. For the first time, it could handle text (kind of). But the "stink" remained. Everything has a gross, yellow tint to it. Here's an example.

We also briefly tried using Grok to make images, but gave up quickly. Example.

But things are getting better. Recently, we have been using NanoBanana by Google. I usually start with a normal image and then edit it using the AI. This works much better. And though the AI is still completely stupid if you ask it to do anything complicated, it works. The images don't smell and the thumbnails come out looking great.

>When 2/3 of your quizzes are huge maps of country subdivisions so you never need to use ai for thumbnails because you just use flags

But seriously, some of these thumbnails aren't that bad even now, it's just that some people are ideologically opposed to the use of ai for image generating (I partially agree with them tho).

I'll just quote myself from the past:

"It's not the image itself, since it doesn't even contain any errors, it's how the image is made. Stealing the works of many thousands of photographers and possibly painters without any permission is not right."

"Most images on Wikimedia Commons are free to use, there is a vast collection of images there."

This. My issue isn’t with the quality of image, but with the ethical concerns of using AI art at all. I get generally it’s not that deep but it speaks to a trend on the internet of its destigmatization which is why I think it’s best to avoid AI whenever possible.

Especially when there are plenty of free to use images made or photographed by actual real people.

I think the other major problem with this is how much stigma there is in general around AI from gen z and gen alpha, particularly the more literate and knowledgeable side (aka the core base of Jetpunk at this point). AI thumbnails won’t have much of an effect on anyone commenting here other than being mildly annoying because we’re all invested in the website already, but I can guarantee there’s going to be a large portion of people my age who will open the page, see it’s full of AI images, and immediately click off - which also leaves only the demographics who are okay with AI use, which generally (though not exclusively) tend to not be particularly invested in high quality, original content or in spending time bettering themselves. This seems like by far the biggest problem to me - new Jetpunk users will likely increasingly shift away from geography and history and into AP brainrot.

I'm not a fan of the use of the AI thumbnails in general, but if you are going to keep using them for featured quizzes my only request is if you're going to change the thumbnail on featured quizzes created by other users to an AI one, can you at least ask for their permission to do so first?

Their grammar may be poor but they have a point. Asking an AI to generate a picture of Goldilocks and the Three Bears instead of taking all of 10 seconds to find a suitable picture on Wikimedia Commons can reflect poorly on the quiz creator.

I'm not a massive fan or user of AI in general. But I believe individuals have the right to know when something is genuine and when something is AI (and some countries are trying to pass laws to enforce this). Can I suggest any thumbnails generated with AI are marked as such?

I support this disclosure.

In France, when a company uses AI-generated images, it must be disclosed (for example, in an advertisement for a beauty product).

I also might add that the usage of AI thumbnails also can be jarring when most thumbnails have real pictures. Let's also be honest, thumbnails are overall not that important to a quiz. And while you might say, "then why can't I use AI", it's because you're making a minor facet a much bigger deal.

Also, why create controversy by keeping them around? Clearly nobody is advocating for AI thumbnails to stay. If you do keep them, at least add a caveat like Stewart mentioned, but I wouldn't understand why when its more trouble than it's worth.
