Borat is my favorite movie of all time by a pretty wide margin. Hilarious the whole way through and one of the most potent pieces of political satire of all time that feels just as relevant today as when it came out.
Other than that, Brokeback Mountain, Pearl Harbor, Jurassic Park, Mean Girls, and Inglourious Basterds are all favorites for various reasons that I think are worth the watch for pretty much anyone.
I feel like accusations about racism are overdone in general, but yeah, Borat is straight up racist.
Imagine doing that movie but Borat is a black guy.
I think, in general, that Sacha Baron Cohen is just not a good person. He's the perfect example of a comedian who "punches down".
The fact that Borat is the first thing that people think of when they hear about Kazakhstan is a travesty. In the future, I'll try to remove references to Baron Cohen from our site. There's a lot more to Kazakhstan than inaccurate stereotypes perpetuated by a racist comedian who has probably never even been there.
Satire is not the same as racism. Obviously Cohen doesn’t genuinely believe in these stereotypes and is doing a caricature of what many Americans perceive foreigners as. Taking something to its logical extreme is very often the most effective way to make a point and Borat does that beautifully. It’s obviously not making fun of people from Kazakhstan, it’s a commentary on how racists in America perceive foreigners and pointing out how ludicrous their actions are.
If the exact same movie was made but with a black guy as the lead actor, I would feel the same because the target of the comedy isn’t the Borat character, it’s the bigots surrounding him.
My favorite movies are Cars, Casino Royale (2006) and 2 Studio Ghibli movies, Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke.
But if you want me to recommend a film to watch I'd say Inception, American Psycho, like any early Pixar movie or Ghibli movie and lastly one of my favorite recent movies I've seen, Pretty Woman.
Definitely La La Land is my favorite movie. But I also love The Wizard of Oz, Citizen Kane, The Princess Bride, Clue, The Greatest Showman, The Truman Show, Edward Scissorhands, Groundhog Day, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Rebel Without a Cause, Singin' in the Rain, Meet Me in St. Louis... I think you get the point. I like movies. A whole lot. Always happy to recommend them to others! :)
Honorable mentions : the two other LOTR movies, every other Star Wars movie, every Harry Potter movie, Marvel and Hunger Games movies. And Zootopia. Because I like Zootopia.
My favorite movies are mostly popular ones like Shawshank Redemption, No Country for Old Men, Good Will Hunting, The Dark Knight trilogy, Terminator 1 & 2, Toy Story, Interstellar, Kill Bill, Raiders of the Lost Ark, etc. I'm not really into a lot of older movies from the 1970s and before.
Difficult to choose only 10 but I would say that's pretty representative of my tastes, even if I'm always happy to discover new movies (172 movies including 149 discoveries watched this year so far).
