What do you think of Stranger Things S5 so far?

The finale of Stranger Things is coming in just a couple of days, but so far I really haven't enjoyed most of season 5. I think it's weird how many people are complaining about episode 7 because of the coming out moment, and apparently that's somehow a bigger concern for them than the other problems in the season.

For me the biggest issue is that there's no sense of urgency. Even though this is probably the biggest season in terms of scope, I never feel any concern for the safety of the characters. The biggest reason is because the Duffer brothers are acting like cowards and they refuse to kill any of the main characters. The biggest slap in the face for me was the scene where Jonathan and Nancy are about to drown in this melting paint stuff, and they have a heartfelt moment as they're on the verge of death. Then, the liquid turns solid and they just forget about it the next scene.

Also the acting isn't that good anymore. Other seasons had these strong personalities like Billy, Eddie, and S3 Robin. Now everyone sort of talks the same and no one is very interesting.

As of now, this is probably my least favorite season, just below season 3. What do you think of this season so far? Am I totally wrong or do you agree?

They are. It was such a mistake to only have 4.5 years go by in a series that was filmed over the course of 10 years, especially when kids are the main actors

So far, I have really mixed feelings about this final season.

Here are some reasons.

I agree the acting is uneven, oscillating between powerful moments and lazy performances. The fact that the actors are way older than their characters doesn't help: it kinda pulled me out of some scenes where the age difference made them less believable.

Some scenes seemed over long to me, with overdramatic tone -just like Hopper/Eleven relationship and Will's coming out scene for example. This last scene was neccesary to the show but it's been stretched out and dramatized to the edge of ridiculous imo. It could have been kept more simple and as effective.

HOWEVER, I really enjoyed watching Will finally coming into his own.

I loved Dustin's evolution in the face of trauma and grief.

The show also keeps giving visually striking moments, like the melting thing or the canyon scenes -very neat!

Overall I'm a little disapointed by this season. Let's hope the final episode will make us forget these flaws.

I’d say the biggest problem with the season is that there are too many characters. How do you give everyone something meaningful to do when there are 20 characters? You have to devote time to every character’s emotional development but it turned into a checklist of monologues to make the actors happy. The obvious solution is to kill off characters as their emotional journey concludes. Yes, killing the two in the melting room would’ve been better… their emotional arc was done and we don’t really need them in the story anymore. Plus, it would have added some stakes. It seems like no one can ever die, not even the Wheeler parents, so why should I care that something dangerous is happening? No one since Barb or Bob has meaningfully died (I did not find Eddie’s death very meaningful). Anyone who’s survived a season is just immortal, really.

I was recommended this series by my daughter, but I couldn't just jump straight in at season 5, so yesterday I started watching season 1....

… and binge watched the first four episodes. Thank you all for not putting too many spoilers into your conversation.
