What is the last time a poem entered the public consciousness?

Submitted by Quizmaster on November 21, 2025
Not counting rap or song lyrics, when was the last time a line of poetry became well-known?

Let's say, for the purposes of argument, that "well-known" means 1% of native English speakers would recognize a single line from the poem.

The most recent one I can think of is 1955:

"I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness"

It's hard to overstate just how absolutely dead poetry is.

i think poetry is dying because it isn’t as stimulating or interesting as music. I personally hate poetry, every time I hear a poem read out loud I think “why can’t this just be sung?”

That does appear to be the case in English. As a native speaker, my knowledge in English poetry is absolutely horrible because it was never properly taught in school and I never had to use them irl.

On the other hand, I speak Mandarin natively as well, and while I did not receive formal education in Chinese, I do know a fair bit of Chinese poetry.

All people who speak Chinese will eventually know the most famous poems...

(I've been waiting the whole day to download the Chinese typing pack on my computer... argh...1 MB isn't that much...)

Speaking of, I remember this one from Dr. Seuss:

"You have brains in your head,

you have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself,

any direction you choose."

This is a harder question than I would've thought. Maybe Sylvia Plath's Daddy?

Every day for me, on the back of my cab on the truck I drive, I have two lines from a short poem by Robert Frost...

STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING

The two lines are...

But I have promises to keep

And miles to go before I sleep

I've very recently started to get into poetry. I think ultimately the difference between good songwriting and poetry is essentially nonexistent. Something like this or this evokes the same amount of feeling, has the same emotional depth, as just about any of the classic poems. Just a continuation of the medium in a slightly altered form.

From English ones - Amanda Gorman’s inauguration speech of Biden.

From non-English ones: In Azerbaijani, poetry is strongly linked to music so there's always new stuff coming out.
