What will be considered luxury by 2050?

Submitted by caspianpunk on April 7, 2026
I've been recently thinking that a lot of things that we treat as ordinary today may feel like luxuries in the future due to climate change, scarcity, and other factors, so we should never take life for granted.

As most of you know, snow is gradually becoming more scarce. Even places like NYC, which used to have snowy winters regularly, are now facing shorter snow seasons. I'm aware that artificial snow is mostly used, but it will never fully replace natural snow.

I also think the price of coffee is going to skyrocket due to rising temperatures.

Another thing I’m concerned about is fish. Here in the UK, I’ve noticed that some supermarkets have stopped selling mackerel due to overfishing.

Then there are technological factors. With AI and a growing surveillance culture, privacy is becoming increasingly rare.

Some future luxuries may actually be low-tech things, like owning physical books.

What do you think? Would love to hear your predictions

Education in general will be considered a luxury good as it was for most of history.

Arguably, post-secondary education is already a luxury good as it is mostly just expensive social signalling.

Ain't it required by law for a child to be taught (shown by Wikipedia)? Good education maybe, but education in general, not so much.

Don't college degrees on average offer a significant return on investment and (much) higher earning potential in life compared to being without them?

The genuine freedom to think or believe or figure out things for yourself without being influenced by the media, social media, peer pressure or governmental machinery. Even today, many of us Earthlings may not have it.

That makes me wonder... will children who aren't brain-rotted also be considered a luxury by the teachers? 🤔

No, there are plenty who aren't. Those who are just show their...brainrottedness more I guess

Kids who aren't on a device 24/7

(this of course excludes kids who might need said device to function properly)

Anything handcrafted by humans will be a luxury.

Tech objects will be seen as lower class.

We're already seeing that shift where the lower classes are more addicted to video games and TikTok while rich people exist in the real world more. Rich parents keep their kids away from devices. Poor parents let the iPad do the parenting.

Why?

Because rich people have more money to spend on stuff for their kids that aren't screens.

Yeah like toys which they will be forced to open in front of a camera for views until he is like 16 (I am referring to Ryan's World)

Agreed and wanted to write this point as well. I also think human-based art and even experiences like dating gonna much expensive.

Instead of rich/poor, I'd rather say educated/low educated. This is not only a matter of wealth.

That being said, I agree on the screens thing: the more educated you are, the less your children spend time before screens.

In this logic, children reading books will be rare.

Living off-grid. It's already becoming more of a privileged thing.

Is that when Google Maps tries to say that the house that your living in doesn't exist and is replaced by a different address, cause I have that problem.

If we do reach true Star Trek level abundance, then anything made prior to the singularity will be a valuable historical artifact.

It ain't hard to get fresh air. Stick your head in a greenhouse.

You are literally living in a bubble. And also if you stick your head in a greenhouse. A lot of the planet doesn’t have them.

The will, grit and the resources to have both fresh air and fresh water are needed, obviously.

I don't understand what you have said. A greenhouse contains tons of clean air producing plants, therefore having clean air. It was a joke.

I understand that. :) What I’m saying is that large swaths of the world, including large parts of India, just don’t have access to clean water, and clean air.

I don't think snow will be a luxury. It will snow less often, but the storms will bring larger amounts of it. With global warming, winters are becoming milder, but cold snaps are getting more extreme. Snow will stick around during these at least a few times a winter. It will be hard to not see snow, but also rare to see snow for longer than a week or two.

They are still being produced (307,200 to 416,000 in 2025 according to the Federal Reserve). The $2 bill will not be cut anytime soon.
