I remember when some friends and I stayed in an Airbnb in Galveston. I think it was actually someone's dad that rented it, since we're all teenagers.
Anyways, we get there and there's no WiFi, no hot water, and no plates / cups. Okay, whatever. On the last day, we clean up, make the beds, take out the trash, all that stuff. He still ended up getting a $120 cleaning fee, some $30 service fee, and a few others.
It was ridiculous, and I definitely get what you mean. I try to stay away from it if I can. Plus I've heard some privacy / security concerns about it.
I hear people complaining about AirBnb more and more lately.
I’ve personally never had issues where the host falsely advertises, and I can’t recall times where something didn’t work. But I’ve had instances and have heard from others where hosts try to charge ridiculous amounts of money for damage to their space. Earlier this year this old outdoor chair broke (it was in bad shape) and the hosts tried to charge us something like $200 to replace this old lawn chair. The worst part was that my friend (who booked the place) almost ended up having to pay.
And in regards to the rating thing, I just don’t rate them until later (after they’ve already rated me).
It used to be brilliant when it first started. I remember booking a room in Budapest as the plane was on the taxiway. The Owner even picked me up from the airport without charge. But this was in the very early days. Too many people cottoned on to the idea and wanted to make a living out of something that was originally designed for a bit of extra cash renting out a spare room.
Never had bad experience with AirBnb yet, so I won't complain about it. Sometimes a little something's just not as good as expected but since I don't plan staying indoor then it just remains a little unimportant detail.
