Some you could add from the Chanukah Song: David Lee Roth, James Caan, Kirk Douglas, Dinah Shore, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Rod Carew, Ann Landers, Dear Abby, and Larry, Curly and Mo!

First of all, there was another Jewish member of the Rat Pack: Joey Bishop. Secondly, I'm surprised there is no Jerry Seinfeld, Ben Stiller, Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johannson, Mel Brooks, Arthur Miller himself and not just as a hint to get Monroe, David Mamet, Neil Simon, Paul Simon, the Beastie Boys including the late Adam Yauch, Kiss including Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, historians like Josephus, Alan Greenspan, Ayn Rand, the already mentioned Anne Frank, Red Auerbach and Larry Brown of NBA, Ian Kinsler and Kevin Youkilis currently in MLB. Golda Meir, and the main comic book guys: the creators of Superman, Joe Schuster and Jerry Siegel, the creator of Batman, Bob Kane, comic writer Jack Kirby, and the creator of the X-Men, Fantastic 4, Hulk, and Spider-Man to name a few, Stan Lee.

Woohoo for the Jew Crew! I'm part of the tribe myself. And actually, I believe jews make up around 2% of the worlds population.

Actually, it's much much lower - about .2% of the world's population. The decimal point is very important here!

Maybe you're confused. They make up almost 2% of the population of the United States. Much much less for the total world population. 0.2% is about right.

Please add a hint to Marx: He was only Jew by blood, his father had converted to Catholicism. Describing Marx as a jew was actually part of the Nazi-propaganda.
+5
Level 72

It's more complicated than that. Being Jewish is an ethnicity and culture as well. But you are correct that it was used for propaganda purposes.

This is true, except it wasn't Catholicism, it was Lutheranism.

Has anyone else heard that Hitler was a Jew himself? Or his parents were... Something along those lines.
+3
Level 72
Aug 23, 2013
It has been claimed that his father, who was illegitimate, was half Jewish. His grandmother had been a housekeeper for a Jewish family and the theory is that the son of the family got her pregnant. There's no good evidence for this, though, and it seems likely that the rumour is the result of an over zealous historian looking for a juicy story. Anyway, Jewishness is matrilineal, so while it would not have been great from Hitler's point of view to be a quarter Jewish, the fact that it was the male side that was Jewish means that he would not have been considered Jewish even if the story were true.
+1
Level 75
Nov 24, 2013
Depends who's doing the considering. Hitler himself would have considered a person whose paternal grandfather was Jewish to be Jewish, no question. So in the Germany of his time, if that were his lineage, he would have been Jewish.
+3
Level 24
May 10, 2014
Biblically it's not the mother who makes you Jewish, it's the father. Because many women were raped during the middle ages and many times the father was not known, the rabbis of the time make it a rabbinical rule that to be Jewish, the mother of the offspring had to be Jewish. - it's a rabbinical rule, not a Biblical one.
+4
Level 64
Mar 7, 2016
Waiting4, you are oversimplifying the question. The Mishnah establishes the Halakah (rabbincal rule) and is part of the oral Torah, preceding the Middle Ages. There is a complicated debate about this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_is_a_Jew%3F#Tannaitic_Judaism

In the end, it didn't matter. Hitler's chauffeur and best bro, Emil Maurice was a Jew by nazi laws, but he was simply declared a "Honorary Aryan".

These guys never even cared for their own rules if it ever made things difficult for them.

I think it's very important to not give them too much credit for anything.

Here are further examples:

D'Israeli's parents converted to Christianity, so while halachically (according to Jewish law) he was Jewish, it wasn't his practicing religion.

It always seemed weird to me that someone would convert not to be Jewish, but keep the name D'Israeli...

It's in incredibly bad taste to put Zuckerberg, Marx, and Trotsky on here, as they were/are not jewish by religion nor ethnicity. Marx and Trotsky being born to Jewish families is the foundation for the "judeo-bolshevism" neonazi conspiracy theory.

Maybe this is just my ignorance showing, but how exactly can one be born into a Jewish family and not be ethnically Jewish? Like, if their ancestors going back centuries were Jewish, does that not matter? I mean, both of Karl Marx's grandfathers were rabbis; you'd think that'd count for something.

Some of these are a bit obscure for your average non-American (in the sense of a person from the USA). The ones I didn't get were:

1. US Vice-Presidential nomineee

2. Dodgers pitcher

3. NBA Commissioner

4. First Jewish Supreme Court Justice

5. Mafia kingpin (I guessed Hyman Roth, lol).
