Botanically, sichuan peppers are not remotely related to peppers--you might want to put "pepper" in quotes.

Came to say this! Not like vegetable peppers at all, it's a spice, more like peppercorns (though not related to that plant either.)

There's a species of it native to North America (Zanthoxylum americanum) that is rampant on my farm. It is actually in the citrus family, is very fragrant, and has the same numbing quality when chewed.
