I read that "race" as a contest and couldn't figure out an answer. How about call it a tribe instead like Wikipedia does?

Not a bad idea. Plus, I wouldn't want to try to race the Amazons...unless it was a bike race. I'm sure their bows would slow them down.

I thought that Atlas was carrying 'the Heavens' on his shoulders, not the earth.

Yes, mythologically, he holds up the sky. But almost every statue or icon made of him has him carrying the Earth.
