+1 for code, they were code breaking. Deciphering text written in code. Not in codes..
(And someone in the programming bussiness writes code, also not codes. Different subject I know but it is one of those words where the singular is used, Im sure there is a nice term for it but I can think of it now.)
You could ask “Which code did they successfully crack at Bletchley Park?” I think it’s fairly well known, especially after the release of that terrible movie with Matthew McConaughey. You know, the true story that shows Americans saving the day. Again.
Thanks again Quizmaster for more brilliant history quizzes
I asked somebody that had worked at Bletchley what she thought of the American film. She obviously said that it was a load of rubbish.
However, she also told me that the enigma machine that they had started using was initially "found" by some Polish fishermen, who had gone on to a scuppered vessel to see if there was anything useful take (food etc), but they saw the machine, thought that it looked "interesting/important" and pilfered it before the vessel sunk, passing it on to the British.
Wow accepts the dumbest answers to questions on so many of these quizzes but “code” is still too crazy I guess. Ridiculous. They were called the CODEbreakers! Not the CODESbreakers. I can’t even finish typing the “Caucasus” mountains before it’s accepted on every quiz but better put an ‘s’ at the end of code
What did they break? They broke codes. They didn't break code.
And then everyone it types the correct answer just has a dangling S they have to erase.
