In French (language I grew up with) it's "la flute enchantée", so "enchanted/bewitched flute". So it didn't occur to me that it was "magical" in English (that would be "la flute magique")

I think the term 'magic bullet' entered the lexicon as a sort of corrupted version of 'silver bullet'. It still manages to get the point across, but divorced from its origin story, there's no reason for a bullet to be the object that carries the power.
