Untouchable record - Walter Johnson has 110 shutouts, not victories, not complete games, but 110 shutouts. Amazing! The current active leader is Clayton Kershaw with 15, hot on Walter's heels. I should look up how many active players have 110 wins.........
Only 20 active pitchers have more than 110 wins, and the only one under thirty years old is Kershaw. I will firmly state that I think the shutout record (110) is safe for the foreseeable future.
Probably forever, unless current trends shift dramatically. The rate at which a single pitcher pitches an entire game is significantly lower than in Johnson's time.
I always associate Eppa Rixey with the Phillies. He won 20 games for them once. Naturally, he got traded--good players never seemed to stick long with the Phillies in those days,
I was quite surprised that I scored just 19/31. I was guessing so many star pitchers, but they were guys who pitched for multiple teams. I have never heard of several of the names on this list, oh well. Thanks for the quiz!
I'm guessing when you list two teams for a player, it represents the erstwhile team on which they played, along with the franchise's current name. If that's the case, you'd need to add "Americans" to Cy Young, and "Devil Rays" to James Shields.
As the saying goes, you usually needed to throw a shutout to get a win with a lot of those awful Senators teams, and Johnson often did!
Paul Splittorf, Jim Slaton...one All-Star Game between them but a lot of longevity with one team.
(Ryan, Jenkins, Lolich, Maddux, Glavine, Halladay, Martinez, Saberhagen, Wynn, others, no dice)
