Including GBC is like including DSi and New 3DS. They're all redesigns with slightly better hardware and a few exclusive games.

GBC is different enough from regular Game Boy that it deserves its own spot on the list. There were GBC games that are not backwards compatible to Game Boy or Game Boy Pocket. I agree that not every variant should have its own entry, but GBC stands out enough to deserve a separate entry.

No Virtual Boy? May not have been the pinnacle of gaming technology, but it did exist.

I agree, little known, and Nintendo may prefer not to talk about it, but it was definitely a Nintendo manufactured console.

Virtual boy was either a console or portable that's for sure. Should be on quiz.

Great quiz though

There was also the Game Boy Advance SP...

Choosing only consoles for which specific games were made seems a sensible criterion to me.

Virtual boy should be on the quiz. Also, more consistency in the answers. Some require the full name some just require the system name. Eg. 64 worked, but advance did not.

It makes sense to only count handhelds which had a new cartridge type. GB, GBA, DS, and 3DS all had a number of different iterations but change the game standards. I agree though that Virtual Boy should definitely count.

Level 65

In that case the Game Boy Color should probably come out. There were a (very) few cartridges that would play in a GBC but not the older Game Boy, such as Dragon Warrior 3, Pokemon Crystal, and probably a few others, but not enough to really consider it a separate system entirely.

There were quite a lot actually (I've still got a stack of some of them), and setting an arbitrary number for qualification makes less sense surely than just specifying that each console listed must have its own games.

+3
Level 89
Dec 21, 2021
At least in my case, it never occurred to me to try "SNES." On reading your comment, I can recognize that it's a commonly enough used term, but certainly among my friends and I growing up, we always called it "Super NES" (as in: "Super en ee ess") and pretty much never "SNES."

I tried entering "Super NES" in the quiz and was absolutely dumbfounded at the fact that it didn't seem to be a valid answer. After filling out the rest, and coming back, I thought that maybe the "NES" part had to be typed out in full, and started typing "Super Nintendo"... which is the point where it was accepted.

So: fair enough, I suppose. If you know your stuff you'll get it eventually. But like I said, until seeing your comment it never occurred to me (and never would occur to me) to try calling it "SNES." That's just not a term by which I ever think of it.

International suggestion here, maybe accept Famicom and Super Famicom for the NES and SNES accordingly? I typed them both in and neither worked.

Apr 4, 2025
It's really puzzling that Famicom and Super Famicom are not accepted as type-ins. Heck, they are the official names used in Japan, the home country of those consoles, and other markets like Korea and Taiwan. Because it's the official name in the origin country, it appears on English-language media as well

(eg: https://www.theguardian.com/games/2023/jul/18/40-years-of-the-nintendo-famicom-the-console-that-changed-the-games-industry)

It might be worth considering adding a caveat that these are only the systems released in multiple regions. Japan got tones of exclusive systems like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_TV-Game as well as a portable system that used magnetic cards and a few systems over the years that used floppy disks.

As a side note, I'm interested why the Virtual Boy is a caveat. The only thing that really sets it apart from the others is that it was very poorly received by the public. Personally, I thought it was a cool idea that simply suffered from haste. But it was widely released with several games available in multiple regions and is certainly well known by Nintendo enthusiasts and by old farts like me who were around when it launched.

With the recent update, I believe now's probably the best time for certain caveats to be updated. There are some very valid arguments being made in the comments for consoles that were left out. If the rules are that a console needed to have exclusives released for it that weren't backwards compatible, then the DSi and New 3DS both need to be added. (Though the DSi exclusives were all digital-only, they were indeed made exclusively for the DSi)

If not, it does seem a tad arbitrary to pick and choose which upgrades do and don't count, as many have pointed out with the GBC. Especially with the addition of the Switch 2 (which very much echoes the "update the hardware and add a feature or two" upgrades of the DS-DSi and 3DS-New 3DS) we are kind of left without a real basis for the exclusions.
