Sounds like the Quizmaster is going "woke" regarding the question about the university named after a slave trader - although we all know it's soooo trendy right now that little tidbit was quite unnecessary - hopefully this type of question doesn't become a trend on this site.
That was just the man's occupation. It's in the first line of his Wikipedia bio. It's a relevant and accurate summation and no different than saying that Emily Dickinson was a poet or Enrico Fermi was a physicist or Rockefeller an oil tycoon. Obviously one *could* use other terms to describe all these people (letter-writer, teacher and father, perhaps) but the clear, concise and neutral one is "slave trader".
Elihu Yale profited from the slave trade, and he used that money to invest in the university that would eventually be named after him. How is that "unnecessary" information?
From a quick reading of the Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elihu_Yale), people disagree how much Yale was involved in the slave trade, and the slave trade he was involved in probably isn't the one you're thinking of. His involvement was in the Madras slave trade, which is in India.
So, I don't think it's really a good idea to list his occupation as "slave trader." Here's the article Wikipedia links: https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2020/06/28/cancel-yale-not-likely/
I'm confused: Why does being involved in the slave trade in India make it less of a good idea to mention his involvement in that industry than if it been in say... Ghana?
KirstenB: yeah, I hate 'woke' 'snowflakes'. I much prefer the version of the world in which the British Empire was the best thing ever, and anyone who raises questions about it is a pathetic whiner.
All those who survived colonial rule are frankly ungrateful. We gave them railways, for pity's sake!
Yeah!
(I am quite fearful that all this may be misconstrued, but that's not my problem.)
I'm not sure I agree with the cluing for the German strategist, the top spot seems universally given to Erich von Manstein. When he didn't fit I went to Erwin RommeL. Ludendorff might be better clued with a mention of the War Academy, or Ober Ost.
"Evidence as to whether Yale personally owned slaves, or participated directly in their sale is inconclusive". Doesn't sound like it was his primary occupation to me.
