To answer the question on the front page: Has Pixar lost its touch? hm... answering from Nov 2017, maybe. I never saw Cars 3 but the first two Cars movies were the weakest movies they ever did so I'm not sure why they made a 3rd one, or even a 2nd. Finding Dory was well received but personally I thought it was boring and a big let down compared to Finding Nemo. Also I was disappointed that Finding Dory contains so many gags that are just badly rehashed from the first film... that's something you see in low brow Austin Powers or American Pie movies, not something Pixar usually does. The Good Dinosaur was so-so. Monsters U. was "meh." Brave was good but, back in 2012 when it was released it was probably their 3rd worst. (now it's merely their 7th) Cars 2 was basically a big budget Saturday morning cartoon. The only really bright spot since 2011 was Inside Out.

Haven't seen Coco yet but it's getting good reviews.

I think they only made the cars sequels to sell more toys.

Yeah, I'll withhold my judgement about whether or not they've lost their magic until I've seen Coco. I'm looking forward to it based on the reviews and the teasers I've seen.

Cars have been and still is crazy popular with little kids. They want cars everything, lunchbox payamas and watch the movie everday... similar to what has been happening with frozen. It has been the only two movies that caused such a hype.(here atleast)

That has nothing to do with what adult people think of the movies of course, but if I go by all the kids I know. They cant shut up about those two, and ring the doorbell to show their new cars socks etc. No equivalent. (I guess the subject has a lot to do with it, cars is appealing to boys and princesses to girls. And yes, each gender can like what they want, I never liked anything girly myself, just stating what I see around me)

Cars was the favorite movie of two of our grandsons. We watched it over, and over, and over, and over again. I don't remember them being that keen on the sequels, though.

Coco is absolutely AMAZING! Easily one of the top animated films (Pixar or Disney or otherwise) that has been released recently.

Inside Out was pretty good too. I've heard positive reviews of Soul, though I haven't watched it yet. I think the issue might be more that Pixar has recently been doing a lot of sequels, and that as a rule sequels are never as good as the original (although, as I stated earlier, Toy Story 2 might be an exception to that rule).

Coco is a fantastic movie that's beautifully done. You can see how much love and detail went into it!

I remember watching it for the first time & noticing some foreshadowing (notice the guitar's headstock ;). Another detail I loved was the fact that Hector was originally from Santa Cecilia. Saint Cecilia happens to be the patron saint of musicians!

Cars is a very good movie in its own regard too. The animation still looks modern & contains a very good message that tends to go over a lot of people's heads b/c it lends itself easier to children. (IDK if that makes sense, like it's easier to make toys and stuff).

Cars 2 was quite a fun movie that god pretty dark at times! Honestly it should've been its own separate thing/a spinoff. It really soured a lot of people's opinion of the whole Cars line and sticks out like a sore thumb.

I dont think they are losing thier touch so much as thier films are repeating themselves. At this point you could predict a pixar movies story without even watching it.

Like a certain twisty director a alot of thier movies are built around a plot twist that is usually obvious from the get go or have an overused plot device that has you rolling your eyes the momement you see it. Coco the twist villain was obvious from the start. Same with incredibles 2. Reds mother daughter conflict which is the same exact thing as braves.

Like disney classics they have saturated themselves to much. Even soul a solid movie has too many elements repeated from earlier films like inside out and good dinosaur.

Monsters U was in my estimation there last great film and very underated.

It might say something about a decline in the effectiveness of Disney's/Pixar's advertising that the film that was just released is the one that is the least guessed on the quiz. Used to be that when a new Pixar movie came out the advertising was omnipresent and unavoidable. Now... it seems commonplace that they are released and nobody knows.

They have to pump out more movies in a shorter time to sustain the growth rate of a Disney Empire, that's agglomerating more and more mass.

Sequels are pretty save bets. I don't even want to know, how many great ideas are not getting greenlit due to cowardice of the executives.

I suppose that's levelling out a little recently with more original ideas, counting Luca and this years 2 not on the quiz yet. And if you consider Lightyear to only be "inspired", not a pre or sequel. Some are losing their touch though, Soul lost me for most, Onward was a bit boring to me. I did love Luca though, and I thought Coco was their best since the very early days.

I liked Onward and Soul, even though I felt the latter was overrated and kind of a rehash of Inside Out. And the former, while good, wasn't in their top 10. Didn't make it all the way through Lightyear or Turning Red. The latter, especially, was obnoxious. But I know people who liked it. I guess it's pretty subjective...

Missed The Incredibles and the sequel. This is not my day... I can't get 100% on anything lol.

I don't think Pixar is declining, although Toy Story and Monsters Inc are probably the best films and those were among the earliest. There are a lot of sequels, too. Finding Dory was meh and Cars got 2 sequels when it wasn't that great to begin with. I actually really liked Monsters University, though.

You know what they say opinions are like. I thought Finding Nemo was among their best ever. Didn't really like Monsters Inc that much. And Toy Story 2 and 3 were both better than the original, IMO. But agree on Cars.
+2
Level 68
Jun 20, 2020
I think Up and Inside Out are their best, for sure. They're both written and directed by the same guy, Pete Docter, who definitely seems to approach the movies from a more existential and philosophical perspective. He is also the writer and director of the next movie, Soul, which is apparently about a man's soul being separated from his body. Really looking forward to what he does with that.

I know it's not a popular opinion, but I still don't really like 'Up' all that much. The opening is obviously immaculate, but the entire rest of the movie doesn't nearly live up to the "Married Life" segment that opens the film. I think Ratatouille is their best film.

Some of the answer stats surprise me how low some of the films are guessed. Admittedly as the films with prequels and sequels are guessed all in one, it's easier to remember those over 2, 3 or 4 films. Is this a let on to their popularity? A Bugs Life for me is so underrated and was brilliant, and I thought Coco was one of their best since the early days. Really loved Luca too, when it gets added. But with the latest films just going straight to Disney+, and that's going to be the same for Turning Red this year, I'm not surprised. New Pixar releases used to be teased for months, and you knew when they were coming out and looked forward to them, now aside from genuinely interested fanatics, they nearly slip the radar.

Our family likes Coco, but we like Book of Life (20th Century Fox) better. It came before Coco, and I believe inspired Pixar to make Coco. Coco came 3 years later, and when we watched it, we couldn't help but think that it was sort of a rip-off of Book of Life. The stories are different, but they are both centered around the Day of the Dead. Both have portions of the movie set in the land of the dead, and both feature a guitar-playing protagonist. Because 20th Century Fox isn't as well known for making animated films, they didn't draw the same crowd that Pixar did.

For me, I think that the best out of them all will forever be Toy Story, which is the best in history. Lightyear made it just as amazing, but nothing beats the originals.

Another of my absolute FAVOURITES is Soul. It was beautiful, and it was gut wrenchingly amazing. I will never forget the emotions watching that, and it was so beautifully done. It deserved it's Oscar and the rest of its rewards.

But Toy Story deserved more, and is a true classic.
