Napoleon not acceptable as a type in? Come on!

Should it be? I'm not sure. Maybe a French person can weigh in.

I think Napoleon should be accepted. He is usually known as Napoleon III and most people do not know that his first name is in fact Louis-Napoleon.

This question tripped me up at first when I tried to write Napoleon.

Indeed he is mostly known as Napoleon III

I don't think it should. I think writing solely Napoleon implies the first one too much.

Bonaparte also stands for Napoleon I so that doesn't change anything. I am French and I definitely think Napoleon should be accepted. Also Giscard should be enough for Giscard d'Estaing.

It's easier with Napoleon accepted, I think it's ok like that.

But I think useful to remind that "Napoléon III" was his denomination as emperor whereas "Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte" was his denomination as president, which is quite different !

I think it is good that Napoleon is accepted

It shoudn't be because it's not correct.

Napoleon is Napoleon the 1st and not Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte.

Napoleon never became a French president - they are not the same person

Plus, Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte became Napoleon III but as an Emperor not as president...

If only one of each name is allowed, who let so many Louis's become king in France?

Historians usually ensure they never call the president "Napoleon", nor the emperor "Bonaparte". Usually this is how we know if we are talking about him as president or emperor: president Bonaparte, emperor Napoleon III.

Note, this has nothing to do with existence of the 1st Napoleon. But same distinction exist for that one: consul Bonaparte, became emperor Napoleon I).

Likewise, if Trump were to crown himself as King Donald I (not implying that this is possible. I use this example just because he is the current president), that should not alter answer of "US President" quizz, only of the future "US kings" quizz.

Besides, in this case, keep in mind that Napoleon isn't even his first name. Even his family never called him that before his coup. He took that name to claim heritage from Napoleon I.

Even at school, in France, I was taught to call Napoleon the 2 emperors, but "Bonaparte" the consul and the president

i'm french and I don't think "napoleon" should be accepted since it is related to his "emperorship ?" and not mandateas president of the II republic

Any chance of being a little more forgiving with the spelling for Giscard d'Estaing? That final "i" is sneaky and I had all the rest correct!

Giscard should be enough. It's a bit colloquial, but many people just say that. VGE might be accepted as well.

Calling Le Pen a Nazi is like calling Bernie Sanders a communist. There's certainly an argument to be made that they're in that *direction*, but there's such a massive gulf that the comparison is not ultimately legitimate.

They you should root for our former secretary of state for digital sector, Cédric O.

(I am not sure there are much more other things to say in favor of him for president, that the fact that it make it easier to type his name. But I guess, for a non-french user of jetpunk, that would be already a lot :D)

Well, the FN is a fascist party but couldn't win. And even if Le Pen was president, she couldn't that easily become a dictator. But she would try to isolate France, to get rid of the immigration, to muzzle the press and control the media and the arts, to reinforce the executive power, and so on... As for the "muslim caliphate", I just can't tell how stupid that was : Nowadays, most of France's population is christian and won't become muslim that easily. Do they think that the islamic state, Al Qaida or anything else could declare war to France? Come on, France has got the BOMB... There is no way France could become muslim in a near future (as the Quizmaster said elswhere, anything came happen on a larger scale, of course).

Not that much. Her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, is an obvious fascist. She has tried to show a softer side, she has claimed that the party had become more respectable, but I seriously doubt it. Her aggressive attitude during the between tours debate says it all, which is by the way the reason why she didn't get 40% rather than 35...

"But she would try to isolate France, to get rid of the immigration"

Why would it be a problem to eliminate immigration and with this islamic terrorism? If I was a French, I would be pretty mad that my country is full of immigrants from different cultures and I should fear of being a victim by an ISIS terrorist....

Luckily, here in Hungary we do not have any of that kind of problem. We live among our own kind.

A number of the major French figures were PM and not President so it's a little confusing. The presidency was a considerably weaker role prior to the Fifth Republic. Hence:

* Clemenceau

* Leon Blum

* Petain

were never President in any of these Republics. (Petain was obviously President of Vichy but only the surrendering Prime Minister of the Third Republic.)
