If you know how US interstate highways are numbered, it's easy to guess. The rules have exceptions, but in general multiples of 10 (in this case, I-90) go from coast to coast. They're also in numerical order, south to north. So, the opposite end of I-90 from Washington has to be in a northeastern state. Also, I-90 in Boston is somewhat infamous, due to the Big Dig mega-project a couple decades back.

A similar rule applies for north-south highways - hence I-5 runs the length of the west coast, and I-95 runs the length of the east coast.

I think the key here is "if you know how US interstate highways are numbered". Most people outside the USA don't have detailed knowledge of the USA's motorway system, in the same way that I wouldn't expect an American to be able to name cities on the M1 or something

Actually, only 10, 80, and 90 are coast-to-coast. 20 and 30 end in Texas, 70 in Utah, and 40 about 100 miles from the coast in the California desert. 50 and 60 don't even exist.

There is a 50 that goes from Sacramento to Maryland, but it's just a highway and not an interstate.

US-20, US-30, and (arguably) US-50 are also pretty much coast to coast roads. People generally forget about the US Routes, as they are also highways, albeit usually less useful for long distance travel than interstate highways. If you're counting from the Pacific coast to the Gulf coast, from the Atlantic coast to the Gulf coast, or the great lakes as a "north coast", the number quickly increases.

I didn't know all that about multiples of ten and everything--thanks for sharing. I just figured Washington is all the way north so Boston would be the equivalent on the east coast.

The third clue down in the red section doesn't apply to a specific state. The answer could literally be any other state that was part of the Union other than the answer to the previous question.

I'm a Brit so what do I know? But I assume the question means what state became a member of the Union during the Civil War when it wasn't before. If I understand the little American History that I know there were many states that were part of the Union before the Civil War. Then some left to form the Confederacy and then presumably rejoined after they lost

If this is correct then there would be many states that would not qualify under this question as it appears that only two joined the Union DURING the Civil War. Some states never left after they joined. Other states were members of the Union before the Civil War then left at the beginning and rejoined at or after the end

And some states joined well after the Civil War (e.g.Alaska and Hawaii). I fail to see, therefore, how all but one state satisfy the question.

Unfortunately not enough people know Kevin Bacon was raised in the same city & state Ben Franklin moved to. Yeah, obviously I had to Google it, but I was trying to think of any 6-degree connection anyone could make with Kevin Bacon to a state besides Hollywood, California obviously.
